Don't accentuate your heavy areas with ruffles. Never wear them on a blouse if your busty, or around the hem of your skirt if you have hefty legs.
By wearing the same color skirt, hosiery and shoes you'll look a lot thinner from the waist down.
Try to create a vertical image whenever possible. Wear long scarves, dresses that button from neckline to hem and vertically striped outfits.
Control-top pantyhose will give you that five-pounds-thinner look anytime.
Wear wrap-around skirts to effectively camouflage bulging stomach, hips and derriere. A wrap coat can also make you look thinner.
Where you are heavy, wear dark colors; if you have large hips and legs, wear dark skirts and pants. Dark colors recede and don't draw attention.
Where you are thin, wear warm or bright colors; if you have small shoulders and are small-busted, wear pastels to spotlight these thin areas.
Never wear a tight belt which forces bulges above or below it. And don't wear anything with a tight elastic waistband.
Your legs will look longer and thinner if you wear sling back and backless shoes rather than pumps.
Remember that small patterns are best for big people. Avoid clothes with large floral patterns.
Finally, one last suggestion. Try wearing a cool-colored v-neck sweater belted over a warm-colored v-neck shirt. This will draw the eye inward to the warm color and upward toward the face.

Buying clothes that are a superb fit invariably help. So many people make the mistake of trying to cram themselves into something x sizes to small - the result is more bulges and lumps than ever there needs to be.
Well fitting clothes do not NEED to be all dark - but avoid big garish patterns and clashing colours.
If you want a fab example of a large person who nearly always looks amazing, google for Dawn French - big lady who almost always looks stunning.
Makeup can help - by making sure that double chins are "softened" - and decent posture goes a LONG way too. Simply standing up straight and not slumping over makes a big difference.
Hair that complements too - usually somthing fairly simple or "bubbly" works best - fiddly twee things are not USUALLY the best at hiding things
As for losing weight in ahealthy way, the best perhaps is to aim to lose a TINY amount by permenetly changing your eating. Do NOT diet - because when you stop, you will gain the weight - simply choose to eat a little more healthily than you do now - if you aim to only lose a tiny bit each week youi will quite probably manage it AND not feel starved AND therefore keep to it.
A tiny bit more excercise might be good - even if just an extra few minutes walk on a nice sunny day.

When wanting to dress to appear thinner, the ten tips in this article can help you achieve that sleeker, leaner look.
Not everyone can wear the ‘perfect’ size 6. If you are a woman who seeks to slim her appearance when she dresses, this article is just for you.
Let's look at how to: Dress to Look Thinner
Dress Thinner Tip #1: Wear the right size.
No outfit is going to take 20 pounds off your hips, but choosing the right clothing that fits properly can go a long way to slimming your look. If clothes are too tight, all the bulges, rolls, dimples, or any other flaw you may have will show through. If clothes are too big, they add bulk and can make you look heavier than you actually are.
Dress Thinner Tip #2: Long skirts for tall women, below the knee for short.
If you are very tall, you can wear a longer skirt that will elongate the look of your body and thus make you appear leaner. If you are shorter, a longer skirt might make you appear even shorter, but a skirt that falls right below the knee will help you appear a bit taller and leaner. Avoid ankle length skirts if you are short and avoid above the knee skirts if you are tall.
Dress Thinner Tip #3: Patterns fool the eye.
Optical illusion patterns, diagonal stripes, zig zags and the like can fool the eye and detract from problem areas. However, avoid horizontal and vertical stripes because these both can cause you to appear heavier.
Dress Thinner Tip #4: V-line neck and waist.
A V-neck outfit can help draw attention away from the middle area, thus slimming your entire appearance, while a V-line waist on a skirt or dress can really help reduce the appearance of bulk at the waist and top of the hips.
Dress Thinner Tip #5: Boot-cut pants, no flared or tapered legs.
If you have larger hips and thighs, when you wear pants, you do not want to wear the slim ankle or flare cut pant legs. The best cut for slimming is the boot-cut pant leg, because this will give a more symmetrical appearance and thus make you appear thinner.
Dress Thinner Tip #6: Avoid middle/waist bulk.
Avoid bulky scarves and belts around the waist, especially if your problem area includes your hips and waist.
Dress Thinner Tip #7: Wear heeled shoes.
If you can, wear at least a small heel on your shoe. The higher the heel on your shoe, the more slimming the effect. Heeled shoes slightly change the center of gravity as well as accentuating the usually smaller lower part of the legs while adding height – all things that cause you to look thinner.
Dress Thinner Tip #8: Minimum jewelry, size appropriate.
Avoid bulky jewelry, especially around the neckline. However, at the same time, if you are a larger women wearing very small pieces of jewelry, this can add to the illusion you are bigger than you really are. Pick jewelry appropriate to your size, without a lot of bulk.
Dress Thinner Tip #9: Avoid pleats.
Where it’s darts in shirts, pleated pants or skirts, pleats will pull when moving and if you have a bit of extra weight, they will not help accentuate your best features. This is especially true of your stomach area when wearing skirts or pants – avoid pleats.
Dress Thinner Tip #10: Foundation garments.
Yes, ladies, this means your underwear! It’s ironic this article ends where the dressing begins, but foundation garments make all the difference.
Bra straps that are too tight cause rolls or bulges. Panties that bind and don’t move with you can do the same not to mention those unsightly panty lines. Hosiery also can help slim your appearance. Body slimmer undergarments or foundation garments that fit properly can make a huge difference in how you look once you put on your clothes

Healthy Body Mass Index BMI should be your greatest concern not the mythical hope full "idealistic" set by the media.
As for healthy diet the body needs 1200 calories a day to not go into shut down mode. So aiming for 1400 to 2000 calories with activity ( not necessarily exercise) and water, would be a good idea. Most of us are at some level of dehydration. Drs. say going potty every 2-3 hrs is a good guage for hydration.
But since you asked,
Dark colors work the best
Vertical lines/ stripes will also help
Wearing heels will give a greater illusion of height thereby changing the proportions of space
Make-up should be light not dramatic, keep it small and up, highlight where there are shadows to help hide other features.
Jewelry earrings small and tight to the face
necklace long and thin small guage
good luck

I am a plus size woman, and have become an expert on picking clothes that are flattering.
Pick pants that have a slight flare at the bottom to balance heavier hips. Don't make them bell bottoms or they'll give you a HUGE pear shape.
Leave all stripes aside. Even vertical stripes break your body into columns and can make you look bigger.
Patterns - the smaller the better. Stay away from huge polka dots, or any pattern that's big.
The new shirts where the middle comes in right between and under your bosom, then flares out a little, are perfect for hiding the little tummy problems you might have. Make sure it's not crinkled because that might make you look pregnant.
For shoes, pick something that elongates your feet and legs. Pick slightly pointed toes, they don't have to come to a point. If you are picking boots, don't pick those that end halfway upto your knees; they make your legs look shorter.

It would appear that you have very good answers for dressing yourself. I have seen many ladies that choose friends that are even heavier so they look smaller, but it won't really cure anything.
If you are sincere about losing weight, it will take won't power and exercise dependent upon how much you WANT to lose and how much you NEED to lose. A reasonable healthy diet is the first step. The won't power is what you will not eat or drink to get where you want to be. Snacking on a regular basis is trouble and diet drinks can't remove the water, which causes one of the hardest problems when dieting, retention. Plenty of fruits, vegetables, and fiber along with an adequate amount of meats and dairy will help get you started. Keep your portions smaller than usual, avoid too much sugar, salt, starches, and fat or saturated oils. Eat slowly and "listen" to your body. When you feel "comfortable", stop eating and try to keep track of your portions. A veggie snack or fruit when you feel hungry will suffice and don't eat just prior to laying down or bed time. Starving yourself actually shocks your body into creating fat cells to store energy for a long duration without food and your body starts feeding off your muscle. Slow and easy through each plateau of weight loss and increased activity will get you where you want to be over time. I have personally chosen to have 1/2 a grapefruit without sugar or salt immediately after a large meal. Citric acid helps remove the new fat cells you may have had during your meal and be sure to contact your physician if you are talking about a long term diet. they can suggest a vitamin supplement to help get all the proper nutrients. I hope I have helped. David

I find that empire waist shirts, or shirts that gather a little right below the breasts and on the ribs help to hide a gut. Also, wearing higher waisted pants reduces that "muffin top" effect you get from low rise pants. And straight leg or boot cut tends to balance out hips. And personally I find adding a shoe that adds a bit of height really reduces the look of excess weight.
As for the face longer hair is better than short, and keep it straight on the sides. Poofing out the sides will just make a head look bigger and tying it up in a harsh ponytail or bun is a surefire way to "pumpkinhead" in my opinion.
And then there's the old dark clothing standby. Another trick is to wear pants and an overtop of some sort (blazer, hoodie, cardigan, etc) EXACTLY the same color, and then have a fitted shirt under of different color. These things at least make me look better to myself - if I even bother with trying.

Everyone thinks I weigh much less than I do. Its the way I dress. Nothing tight. Not real baggy either. Black pants and darker jeans will make you appear thinner. No pockets, front or back. No belt.A shirt that covers the tops of your arms so the back fat does not show under armpits.A V-neck will make your neck appear longer instead of wide. also a long necklace does the same. High heels will make your legs look longer. A tan does wonders. I use the fake tan with the bronzer in it so you see results immediate. Never let your belly hang out of a 2 piece suit, your better off with cut offs and a white tank top on top of the suit.

Wear clothes that FIT. Don't just wear big baggy clothes because you think you'll hide the fat under them; the extra fabric makes it look like extra pounds. Figure out what your favorite body part is and accentuate that - if you're like me and have a small waist, wear clothes that show that off (something with a belt or waist-shaping, or tops that skim the body rather than a shapeless XL men's t-shirt). If you're more apple-shaped, with a "generous" belly, but maybe have a nice rack, find v-neck tops that show off a little cleavage.
The best way to lose weight AND KEEP IT OFF (the most important part that all too many people forget) is to eat less and move more. One good healthy way to do that is Weight Watchers, because they really do teach you how to eat healthily and encourage you to exercise, and part of their program is also "Maintenance", where you figure out how you need to eat and exercise to maintain your weight loss.

You will always look better when your clothes fit correctly. If you dress in baggy stuff, you appear sloppy and fat, so don't try to go supercasual. On the other hand, don't try to squeeze yourself into clothes that are too small, you will look like a sausage about to bust! You don't want to look juicy for Pete's sake.
I would also say that sometimes you need a tasteful ignorning of all the "slimming rules". When you dress all in black or clothes that call no attention to you at all, or cover yourself in vertical stripes, you just fall victim to fashion rules instead of being yourself...and just because you are heavy doesn't mean you should have to fade into the woodwork. If you like horizontal stripes and bright colors, well, wear them! Just use them to highlight your best features and not your trouble spots. Kind of goes without saying that you don't want to let your trouble spots just hang out. If you have flabby arms don't go sleeveless, etc.
But in all things you want to wear the clothes, you don't want them to wear you.
Weight gain and loss usually really affects the look of your face, so I think some makeup trickery might help with fullness in the cheeks and chin...it would be a lights and shadows thing, like all good makeup is. I don't have those details.
