Can they smell the menstruation?
Honestly... I'm going camping this weekend and so far I know 3 of the girls are on their periods.

A bear has a very keen sense of smell, and from what I understand, yes, a bear can detect a woman on her menstrual cycle, or tampons or pads that contain blood. A lot depends, though, on where you are going camping. If in an area devoid of brown bears, and only black bears, then the chances of an incident are much reduced. Even with brown bears, though, there is little evidence to definitely attribute definite bear attacks to women on their period. For more information, and precautions to take, click on the below link. Hope this helps.

As an avid backpacker for more years than I care to count, I have always heard this and many times, have traveled during this time of the month in the high, high Sierras of California. -However, that said, that's black bear country, not grizzily/kodiak (and I've hiked Wyoming and Alaska as well..) I would not be ultra concerned, rather, take the normal precautions, bury anything plenty deep, wash as needed, and of course, take pepper spray (about 10% or whatever your state will allow). Believe me, the deet alone in mosquito repellent repels, often, more than just mosquitos, as well.
Naturally, I ALWAYS took cotton underwear that could easily be washed out in a collapsible/folding camp bucket and a washcloth.

I would truly, speak to a forestry biologist about this, if you're really concerned...

Have a great time!

Grace

I have never heard of females being attacked by bears because they are on their periods. I also think you will be safe if you camp with others.

No.

You have nothing to worry about.

Just don't leave food out in the open and take other necessary precautions to avoid attracting bears.

I would suggest that they bury their "sanitary napkins" after they go to the bathroom just to keep the scent out of the air. Bears can smell blood in the air.

yeah it doesn attract the bears because (i know this is gonna sound sick) when a woman menstruates it smells fishy to animals.

YAY! you rock here...
Put a honey pot beside each girl ... and finally its the bear's choice ... you'd be in a trouble if that bear is a "male" LOL!
