No - you can use any corn syrup if the recipe calls for Karo syrup. There are even recipes that don't use the syrup at all and use something like brown sugar
Buttermilk Pecan Pie Recipe
3 eggs, beaten
1 1/3 cups sugar
2 tablespoons flour
8 tablespoons (1 stick) melted unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup buttermilk
1 cup pecan pieces (or chopped pecans)
1 unbaked 10-inch pie crust
Instructions
1.Preheat to 275F.
2. Beat eggs with a whisk. Add sugar and flour; beat well. Add melted butter, buttermilk and vanilla.

2. Sprinkle pecan pieces evenly into the pie crust; pour in egg mixture.
3. Bake about 1 hour or until golden brown and set.
Caramel pecan Pie
INGREDIENTS
1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust
36 individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
3/4 cup white sugar
3 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup pecan halves
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C.) In a saucepan over low heat, combine caramels, butter and milk. Cook, stirring frequently, until smooth. Remove from heat and set aside.
In a large bowl, combine sugar, eggs, vanilla and salt. Gradually mix in the melted caramel mixture. Stir in pecans. Pour filling into unbaked pie crust.
Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until pastry is golden brown. Allow to cool until filling is firm.
Brown Sugar Pecan Pie
1 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 Tbsp. flour
2 eggs
2 Tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 cup pecan pieces or halves
Mix sugars and flour
Beat thoroughly - eggs, milk, vanilla and butter. Fold in nuts
Pour in pastry pie pan
Bake 40-50 minutes at 375°

It doesn't have to be the Karo brand as long as it is the exact same type of syrup, but Karo is definitely the best.
You cannot substitute maple syrup or something like that....it does not thicken like Karo just in case that's what you are asking.

Karo syrup is like calling all tissue Kleenex. As long as it's the proper color (light, dark) then it will work.

the recipe i use just calls for dark corn syrup, so it probably doesn't matter.
