No, they don't make them like they used to. Now that the technology has fully matured, as well as due to advancements in engineering, it is easier to make one significantly cheaper that will, on the average, last only as long as necessary. "As necessary" probably is based on statistical info like how long the average person wants to keep a microwave, or what design life or mean time between failure (MTBF) should we design for to maximize profits. Kinda sux, huh? Back in the day, there were more unknowns, which meant that microwaves had to be basically overengineered in at least some areas.

Actually, the cost of repairing your existing unit (assuming the parts are available) will be on-par with the cost of a new one, BUT the repaired unit will probably last longer than a new one. That's something to think about, too.
We have an old VCR that has been re-furbished twice over the past 25 years for less than the cost of the 5 new VCRs we probably would have purchased over that time (of course it doesn't get used as much now that DVD's, etc. are the 'thing').

Sorry I must be living in the past as I am not aware of combo
microwave/convection oven but I am sure if you give any new combo with the same love and affection that you have obviously given the recently deceased you will have many happy years together.

According to my Magic 8 Ball: "Outlook is not good"
As you pointed out, "they don't make 'em like they used to".
On the bright side, I suspect the one you bought today cost less than the one you bought 24 years ago. Even without adjusting for inflation.

I've had my microwave for about ten years, but I very much doubt that anything made these days will last anywhere near as long as your old faithful
