I'm staying with my best friend's family for more than a week. I just want to make sure I don't come across as rude, but I don't want to spurt thank you's after every occasion either. Any tips on how to act?

Use your best manners, help with meal prep & clean up and any other chores you can. Keep your own things gatherd in one place and not scattered all over their home. A nice gift either at the begining of your stay or when your ready to leave.

Be polite. Earn your keep by offering to help with chores. Bring a small gift for the family. And send a thank you note when the visit is over.

Be yourself. Different households follow different rules so try to make observations as to how they do things. Do not try to follow everything they do, they might think you are mocking them. My friends moms usually like it when I compliment their choice of furniture or curtains or anything in the household, but be sincere if you do this, don't just say it to suck up to them.

It would have to be a pretty unusual circumstance for me to burden a non familial household like this with my presence for longer than two or three days. I would find that in itself as tremendously rude and offensive. I would be out of the house as much as possible for as long as possible and make your presence unknown as much as possible. Be as invisible as possible. I would speak not, breathe not, eat not, use the facilities not and pay money lots when you leave to offset the tremendous inconvenience that you are imposing on these people.

If you want to be welcomed back anytime soon, you will continue to be ultra polite and do your best not to upset their normal patterns of living any more than you must.
