You'll want to find a book on Nomex, and probably one on composite materials, specifically carbon fiber composites and fiberglass composites.

Composite materials are very strong, but this means you can get away with very thin layers of them. Thin layers bend easily. To make the structure much more resistant to bending, you make it effectively thicker (without adding much weight) by putting half the composite on either side of a Nomex honeycomb. This gives you a larger moment of inertia, making the structure much stronger in bending. If that didn't make any sense, I suggest you also get a book about stress, strain, and material properties.

The person above me is correct in the application. Keep in mind that there are other sandwich panel materials available such as polyeurathane foams, balsa, Kraft, etc. Also, there are different types of honeycomb materials available, such as aluminum - light and inexpensive. There is also software available where you determine # of lamina (for the outer surface), its layup orientation, core materials and thickness, etc. and the software will generate properties and safety factor for you. I want to say it is called CompositePro, but I am not for certain. It is a very handy tool. We used it in creating a bridge spanning 100' for bikers, in attempts to keeping it as thin as possible with a satisfactory safety factor.
