The only reason why atheism has risen to the status of being "popular" as you have stated it to be is because people are no longer afraid against persecution when it comes to voicing out their belief or lack of it. No more flagging, no more burning on the stakes, and since we have an individualistic society now, we no longer care if we get ostracized for our views. Atheism does not involve any "self-control". Self-control is a contradiction to atheism itself. Only religion will give you restriction to anything & everything through its misguided concept of morality and ethics. Atheism is a way of life. It is about living a life where you become true to yourself. No restrictions, no limitations, and specially no hypocrisy. To undestand atheism, you have to do your research and read philosophy, from the archaic to the modern and understand the differences. This is the basic foundation to atheism. Understanding the reason of the philosophies of the period prior to and during the time when the word atheism was coined is essential as it gives you a historical background that you can analyze to understand atheism better. Atheism is intellectual freedom. With intellect comes responsible behaviour.
The problem why atheism is "popular" at the moment is people want to brand themselves as "anti-social" atheist just to seem "cool" and "intelligent" and bible and religion-bashing has become a fun sport. Because of the sense of "intellectual eliteness" and sense of superiority againts the "dumb","mob mentality", religious cattle herd", people jump into the atheistic bandwagon. Some so-called atheist are even arrogant to point out the fallacies of the bible that they use it to point out the inconsistencies of god and religion. But here is the question hot-shot. If you don't believe in god, why use the bible to disprove or discredit god or religion for that matter?
What the majority of so-called atheist doesn't know is atheism is pro-society. It is about living in a harmonious life in a society free from any imposition and dogma. Atheism is not a brand that you can wear because you feel like you belong to it. Just because you are not religious or you dont "believe" in any god doesn't automatically mean that you are an atheist. You can claim to be an atheist but the thing is, are you being true to yourself? Is your claim based on intellect? Or is it based on angst, social rebellion and "what right have you got that I am not what I claim to be?" stand. Atheist begins their quest from being a sceptic, usually with one question - WHY?, then agnostics to becoming atheist. Their progression is a process of intellectual masturbation, of understanding what is it really about. Knowing or trying to understand Why! If you apply any type of self-control then you will never understand why.

I think Atheism involves some sort of 'moral code' as in "if I am 'good' I will be rewarded, if that person believes in an afterlife. But I think the belief, or lack thereof, will always be popular because it gives people a sense of control. Saying there is no God, no higher power, no divine plan makes those that believe nothing believe they are in total control of them selves and their destinies. Not having a conscience to answer to would certainly be easier, but not having a Heavenly Father to believe in and know that He cares would be terribly lonesome in my opinion. But if one has never known that awesome loving-kindness of God, then they have no idea what is out there. Believing nothing is hard for me to grasp, but it would certainly make ones sense of 'self' more grandiose.

I hesitated to answer, but I will put my head on the chopping block with you. I know the question that has been referred to, or one very similar. It was worded to provoke Christians, and it worked. That said, I as a Christian have determined to try to give no offense unless it comes to defending my faith in a meaningful way, or sharing with someone who is receptive. I am seeing Christians post questions and answers that serve no purpose other than to provoke. We ought not to do that, as it is in direct opposition to what we are taught. I will not deny being a Christian for anybody, but we need to be ever mindful of being considerate of others. I understand that atheists and theists are being generalized to the point of ridiculous. The questions coming from those calling themselves Christians that serve merely to provoke are either ignorant of the teachings of Christ or wolves in sheeps clothing. Don't let yourself be pulled into that. Bless you!

What are you talking about? Atheism most definately involves self control. Alot more than any religious can ever hope to understand.
You see, we Atheists are subject to dealing with other people. We also realize that this life is the only life we have and this is the only chance we get. If we screw it up, we have no one to blame but ourselves, so we also take responsibility for our actions. WE are responsible for our lives.
If we hurt others, others hurt us. It doesn't take a whole lot of brains to figure out even though you religious act like its a massive strain on your intellect.
We Atheists do not have a "get out of jail free" card like you religious do. See, you religious only have to say you're sorry to your god, not even the people you hurt, but only to your god and *poof* suddenly you think everything is all right.
Atheists have no fictional heaven or hell, we live for the now and realize that we are responsible for the life we make for ourselves.
There is no other life where we can "make it all better".
For an Atheist, there is no tomorrow, there is today.
Believe me, we have alot more self control than the religious. Last I looked, the religious have massively larger amounts of teen pregnancies, and jail birds, than the Atheists do.
Think before you type. And do some actual research while you're at it.

The premise of your question is dubious. Atheism is not popular in that it is practiced by a distinct minority and it is widely condemned by the superstitious majority. As for involving self-control, one could use "self-discipline" as a synonym for "self-control," and one might argue that logic requires more self-descipline than unquestioningly accepting what one is told despite overwhelming evidence that what one is told is a ridiculous lie. In effect, thinking requires more self-control than not thinking.

I agree with the girl who said it takes far more discipline to practice self control on your own. I never was real religious but I am learned in many religions. My group of friends consists of Jehovah's Witnesses, Muslims, and Christians. I personally lean towards Buddhism/Agnostic. I never needed "religion" to tell me to be good so that I would have a place in "heaven." I don't drink, do drugs, rarely gamble, steal, etc. I take care of my family. I CHOOSE to lead a good life because I want to, not because a standardized religion tells me to do so.

Based upon the under-representation of atheists in the prison population it appears that atheists have superior self control

atheism is the lack of belief in gods
it has nothing to do with self control.
Neither does believing in a religion for that matter
Of course that you want to imply that atheists lack self control says a lot more about you than it does about atheists

It does involve self control. We dont have a book to tell us what to do and what not to so we have to think for ourselves. Remember all the stuff in the Bible you dont think about. Like how you can sell your daughters into slavery, how you can own slaves as long as they are from a neighboring country, how you should not eat meat and milk at the same meal, and on and on.
Just cause you need a book to tell you how to act doesnt mean we do.

Your question makes no sense. Atheism is merely a lack of belief in gods. It has nothing either for or against self control. The two issues are separate and irrelevant to each other.
Would Christianity be more popular if it involved any type of banana?
