Columnaris and Fungus are hard to distinguish the difference between sometimes. But since you said the skin is discolored as well, I am going to take a chance to say that it is columnaris. Check out the info I have described on the link below, and compare with the pictures of both, to see if you can identify the disease as well as the conditions to help get a proper diagnosis before treating.

Furunculosis is a bacterial disease; try something such as Aquarium Pharmaceudicals' Furan-2 if that's the case to treat it, and ensure that your water condition improves (goldfish are very dirty, how often are you changing water? what size tank? how many & what other fish do you have in there?)

I suspect it's the beginning stage of some kind of ulcer type infection.

Do a 50% water change, twice weekly for the next couple of week and dose some anti-bacterial medication until you can see the wounds healing.

Transferring the sick fish to a smaller hospital tank would be a good idea.

Usually a hospital tank would be smaller then your main tank, therefore you could save on medication and it's easier to keep the water in pristine condition. A hospital needs only a sponge filter and since it's small you should change 80% of the water daily. Just make sure the new water is dechlorinated and of the same temp and pH with the hospital tank's water.

Normally I prepare a huge pail/barrel of water (with water conditional) and let it stand over night. I would use the water from the pail/barrel for the hospital tank and top up the pail with tap water after using the water from it. My pail/barrel contains about 3 times the amount of water compared to my hospital tank, so the volume in the pail will buffer any change pH of the tap water and by standing the water over nite, it ensure that it's the same temp as the hospital tank.

Here's a picture of my hospital and quarantine tub which I use interchangably depending on the size of the fish. http://www.arofanatics.com/members/dragonfly_sg/hospitialandquarantine/

I had the same problem with 2 of my fish and it is a skin disease and it can be passed on real fast to any other fish that are in the same tank, I looked alot up and talked to the place i get my fish from and they recamended that i remove 70 percent on the water in the tank and add new, but after adding the new there is medications you can put into the water that will cure your fish and it will prevent the other's from catching it..I use quick cure. its a small bottle you add 10 drops to your tank and in just 2 day's i noticed a major change in my fish .. Tahe disease is called ick..It's a parasite infestation..If you look online at fish disease ick there will show you pictures and give you lots of ways to help and prevent it..If a fish get's harmed or hurt they are more likely to catch ick faster then the other's..

With skin pealing off I would suggest you are dealing with a bacterial infection. A skin level infection can usually be treated very well with some of the commonly available antibiotics such as Maracyn or Maracyn TC (or any other tetracycline). Just treat as the package directs and it sould clear up in a week or 10 days. It will take a bit longer to heal of course, but the damage should stop and healing should start.

A lot of the time, a white blotch is a sign of a fungus infection. Most pet stores sell medicine to treat it. Good luck!

Your fish may have white spot which could kill all your fish in your tank unless you get it out fast it will spread to other fish unless you put it in a tank alone and ask a friend or the internet or a vet for White Spot treatment

This is either fungus or white spots disease, from the description it sounds more like fungus as white spot disease is little white spots all over the fishes body, I would reccommend that the fish is removed from the normal tank as the fungus/fungi or maybe white spots disease is a spreadable infection and if not treated could wipe out all of your fish in you set up enviroment.

Sounds like it may be Ick, you can get treatments to put in the water. If it is ick, and you do nothing, the fish will die and it will spread to other fish in the tank. Go to your local pet store, they have plenty of water treatments and I am sure someone at the pet store can help. Good Luck!
