I want to have a more grown up picnic than iced tea and punch. But is it even allowed to have open alcoholic beverages of any type? Even just sipping wine? Or is some bad tempered cop in the right to ticket me?

Those days are over. You can't have any open alcoholic beverages in public places unless its a restaurant , special event, or arena.

Technically, you aren't supposed to have open containers of alcohol in any public parks in NYC. That being said, I know they served wine during some of the Opera in the Park and Shakespeare in the Park runs recently, so there's a bit of a double standard when it comes to high end events. If you're in Central Park and it's a bottle of wine and not a 40, I doubt they'll hassle you. Maybe put it in a decanter.

No alcoholic beverages are permitted in a New York City Park - If you break the law and get fined, why is the cop who is doing his job "bad tempered"? Are you such an important person that the law doesn't apply to you?
