I have an 11 month old cairn Terror That I just got groomed yesterday at petco. He has the very bushy cairn hair that they are all known for. He was having a lot of trouble dealing with the heat so i though it would be smart to get him a hair cut. The groomer suggested I shave all his hair off for the summer and I agreed, I figured he would know more than I and well it would grow back anyway. Now he looks like a big Chihuahua Which is fine for the summer I figured it's gonna grow back anyway....right? People have been telling me that your not supposed to shave a cairn's hair only supposed to trim it because it won't ever grow back as full or grow back the same. This has been freaking me out because I love his teddy bear hair and would be devestated if it would not grow back the same or as full. Is this true? did I make a big mistake? Or do these people just don't know what they are talking about? I don't really believe it but because a few people have told me this, i'm starting to.

It's not true, don't worry.

It might take a while to grow back, but it will grow back probably a lot more brightly colored and more beautiful since you've gotten rid of all the dead hair.

Since you aren't showing him it's fine.

Show Cairns are hand stripped, never shaved. Shaving can soften the coat and for show they need to have wirey textured hard coats. The color also tends to change on dogs that are cut or shaven, less bright. But you see that more on Wire Fox Terriers....not so much on Cairns.

Pets are always cut or shaven. I don't recommend stripping as it's expensive and needs to be done often so it doesn't hurt.

My Cairn clients were on a 4-6 week schedule. I usually did a version of a show Cairn look, but some liked short for the summer and did get shaved down. I usually still kept the head looking like a Cairn.

Not all groomers do know what they are talking about.

Brush your Cairn and get him used to having his feet held and picked up. It will help him with future grooming.

Keep him groomed on a regular basis and he can look like a Cairn and still keep cool. You can always ask for a shorter version of a Cairn clip....a good groomer should know how to do a proper Cairn look.

Only show groomers/handlers/breeders know how to hand strip...regular groomers do not usually know how and are often ignorant about show grooming, unless they show the breed.

It'll grow back. You wouldn't even need to trim it if the fur didn't grow. I would think that a professional groomer would know this, too. So I wouldn't worry about it. Just be careful letting your dog out into the sun too much now that he has less fur!

I can't think why they would say that. If you shaved off all your hair, it would grow back wouldn't it?
Why wouldn't his fur be the same?
