In many ways the Chruch it self is responsible for the apathy we see in it cause the Body of Christ finds it to easy to reach into a wallet and give to a cause as opposed to getting their proverbial hands dirty. Then when money is tight like it is now, the chuch says "oh well" and expresses apathy instead of being the hands and feet of Christ.
Don't get me wrong I am just as guilty as the rest of the body of believers as I do not give of myself as much as I should, and God has of late convicted me of this.
There will come a time shortly, and in someplaces this is already happening, when that are really in dire straights, drug abusers, and street people, and what society calls " the undesireables" will find the Salvation Army centers and the Rescue missions full, and start filling churches, cause the not only see a way to gat help, but some actually are thirsty and hungry for more than a stale bologna sandwich and a can of juice.
I believe that before the return of the Lord for His saints many of us will be called upon to minister to these people, in our own backyards so to speak, and they wont smell good, and they will be sick, and hurting from withdrawls, but the Holy Spirit will call them just as He did to the prodigal son in the pig stye.
God will destroy apathy in these last days, he will do it in our own land as the time of the Harvest gets nearer and closer, I believe we should begin to do all we can to prepare for the work that God will deliver us to. The Chruches that turn their backs on the least of these...well I think we have an idea what will happen to them.
Father bless us to see beyond our apathy, and see to the needs of our communities. As we send out missionaries into the 10-40 window Lord, help us to remember Lord that for those of us that stay behind there is still work to do. There are still souls to reach, there are still those in need. Lord even if they refuse to come in and take all that we give help us to love these homeless, and drug aboused, and those selling themselves, help us to show your Love Lord.
In Jesus Name Amen.

Wow, that is a GREAT question. One of the best I've ever seen on here!
Apathy in the Church (whatever church it is; most seem to be affected by apathy these days) probably has many causes and sources. The media, as you suggest, is one -- it is a major advocate of the idea that what was once considered sin isn't really that big of a deal.

It's caused by apathy and, to a degree, laziness on the part of the would-be believers. The media doesn't stop anyone from picking up a bible and reading it for themselves.

There are alot of people today that believe the church should just hand out to them and inturn believe that apathy is happening. I see alot of ppl that are on welfare, disability and really have no reason to be. Those same ppl tend to revolve into church wanting handouts and things done for them.
I am all for helping ppl and I do, however, those that refuse to actually work and help themselves out, yes I am apathatic towards. You can only help so many, so make it the ones that actually need it is my philosophy.

No, I think the apathy is the result of the sin nature of man not getting "killed" as it should be. It's easier to just sit back and coast in your Christianity than it is to actually do things.

for those who do not listen to media this would not explain their apathy. So it must be more than one source

I believe, as you can read in many of my othe posts, that it is the spirit of religion itself that causes apathy.
God wants us to to be in a passionate relationship with him and with others. Religion puts way too many restraints on those who want to believe God but do not really know how.
When God begins to speak to your heart, through his spirit, you will find that he truly is a very loving God and his desire is for you to spend time with him.

I believe the media has a lot to do with it, as well as our current culture and state of society.
It is getting worse and worse every day.
