You can't secure a border because nobody has the balls to do it. Besides, America would shut down without immigrants (legal or not).

Overstays make up a very large percentage of illegal immigrants and I wish people would take the time to understand that all are not simply walking across the border down south. Securing the border is going to take many different efforts.
Physical borders...... We have to control our "physical" borders with enforcement and additional guards, fencing and camera's. We also need to let our border agents do their jobs without fear of unjust imprisonment or reprisals.
Overstays...... We have to contain visa abuse and overstays. I have heard a few mentions of an employment card that is impossible (or hard) to duplicate which I think has possibilities also employers need to be held accountable.
Employers and habitual offenders....... A watchdog group has brought a lawsuit against the Social Security Administration for a list of the top 300 offending companies, requested under the freedom of information act. The request was for the names of the top 300 "mismatch" employers, in other words the employers who habitually ignore the fact that they are hiring people who are not legal citizens of the US, thus far the Social Security Administration has denied all requests due to privacy even though only the name of the EMPLOYER is requested.... If this watchdog group succeeds it could change the face of enforcement.
It is not going to be easy it will have to take on many different forms but it can be done.

Um do you have half a brain? The places where toursists travel across the borders is not the same places that the mexicans run across. Look at a map and you will see there is a huge area of desert between Mexico and AZ and
"my understanding is that about 1/2 got here by overstaying a tourist visa" - where did you come up with this figure. THat is inaccurate. But even so, if we deported them like we were supposed to it wouldn't be a problem. ALso if we end birthright citizenship and stop giving them benefits they will eventually stop coming.

Yes. I don't know how many illegals overstayed their visas, but something we want done is for all the laws to be enforced. Catching employers hiring, deporting illegals as they are arrested and who cannot provide proof they should be here, etc. Maybe a better way to track visas and not allowing those who are caught on overstays to come back. Mainly; however, is taking away the magnets that draw illegals here--healthcare and jobs.
It is not going to be easy either way; with or without a fence, but enforcing all the current laws will help overtime, but it is still going to be along time and a big struggle to clean up a mess that was ignored for so long.

There are any number of ways to 'secure' a border. South Korea uses American soldiers to secure its border. When East & West Berlin were divided, the East used their troops and the West used American troops. In essence, it seems like every country on earth can use American troops except America. I'd like for someone to explain that to me. Israel built a double fence on the West bank and it's been very effective.
Just because it may be difficult to secure our border doesn't mean we shouldn't try. The alternative is to leave it like it is and not have a clue who or what comes over - ppl wanting to work, drug peddlers wanting to sell drugs to our children or terrorists who want to blow us to kingdom come.
" In war, their is no substitute for victory. " , I think General MacArthur said. When a nation is at war, it can't afford not to have a secure border.

I believe some people have forgotten the main question here.
In order to secure our border, we need to have civilians take classes for using M-16s and then after their weapons training give them a license to kill, and have them kill anyone who tries to cross the border! Border Patrol is affraid to do their job because of 3 border patrol agents being put in jail for doing their own dam job! Border Patrol needs help and the soldiers down at the border aren't able to help one bit.
Also here's another idea- MINES! Set mines up across the border and then let them take their chances of trying to get to freedom. They will do just about anything in order to come to the U.S. and get "freedom." Well since the amnesty bill did not pass, maybe they'll all pout and go home. If not, then lets step up on the deportation people! Report and Deport!
Any Patriots out there? Give me a thumbs up. If you have given me a thumbs down, you pretty much support illegal immigration. Well, I guess not everyone has a decent brain.

There is no way to keep USA secure or free of terrorism. With Bush as president , well things have only gotten worse. because of him we will be targeted more than ever before.
Illegals now in this country aren't a terrorist threat. maybe many will come. I am more worried about the Canadian border which seems Muslim fundamentalist come thru. not to mention our latest tuberculosis American that came thru the Canadian border because it would be easier.
again BUSH thanks alot!! i feel alot safer

When you hear 'Secure the Border' it may conjure up images of fences, guard towers, searchlights, and mine fields, but, the reality is actually broader and less extreme. It means, for instance, securing airports and ports, as well, since these are also points of entry, and it doesn't mean intercepting everyone who crosses the imaginary line, just reducing thier numbers to the point that internal enforcement agencies aren't jammed up with thier sheer numbers.

You actively pursue, arrest, prosecute and imprison all violators in accordance with the law.
When that happens, the problem will vanish.
This issue is more important that foreign aid or looking for microbes on mars. They need to throw billions at it until it is solved.
