Do what feels right to you, but I think casual is great! Formal attire in a park looks forced, frankly, and you'll be formal for your wedding, so casual is a nice contrast!
Face it, sitting or standing or whatever in poses is always a little forced. If you have a good photographer, they will put you at ease. Be relaxed with each other. Keep cheery by reminding each other of those little things between couples that make you guys unique - embarrasing moments, silly pet names, witty banter, a common dream, something to keep a natural smile on your face.
And congratulations on your engagement!

Just fyi, white is a VERY difficult color to photograph--particularly outdoors in very sunny conditions, which you'll have at 5:30 in the afternoon. The BEST times to take photos outdoors is early in the morning or very late afternoon--full sunshine is not as good--you guys will be searching for shade, otherwise you'll have very harsh shadows/lighting on your faces.
Any time more than 1 person is in the photo, wear clothes that are similar color values--if he wears a dark shirt, you should too, if you wear a light shirt, so should he. They don't have to be the same color, just the same value--you can wear a light pink and he can wear a light blue, and it works. Just don't wear a bright pink top with him wearing a pastel top, see what I'm saying.
Some fun poses--try having him carry you piggy back. A good photographer will also have some great ideas after meeting you guys--and will probably take some photos while you're not even aware he/she's doing so. Biggest tip I can give you is to relax--if you're tense, the pose will look forced. Just relax and have fun! Congrats on your engagement!

Yes, casual wear is fine. The wedding pictures will be more formal, the engagement pics should be more casual, fun, and show a lighter side of the couple. I have seen cute pics in a park with bride and groom peeking out around a tree, the photographer then photoshopped a carved heart with the couple's initials in the tree. Walking and holding hands both from the front and back is cute. Laying on your stomachs with your noses touching can be cute, and it is almost guaranteed to get a natural laugh that won't look too posed. Most of all, relax, have fun, act natural, if the photographer is good, he'll have his camera ready to capture those moments when your personality comes out.

If you can try to find a photographer that INCLUDES engagement photos in their wedding package. If not, have a friend with a decent camera snap some shots of you guys for the local newspaper announcing the engagement. They aren't really needed only if youw ant them. My husband and I didn't get them we just took a picture of us for the paper and spent the money where it counts on the wedding photos.

I am a wedding photographer with many engagement session ideas on my website. The most important thing is to keep it in tune with you and your fiance's personalities. Its all about who you are as a couple.
Think about casual walking poses along with more traditional close up pictures for framing.
Also think about what you are doing with the pictures:
Signature board for wedding: Something close up might be nicer than something from a distance
To mail in invitations: A fun mix of poses might be nice, fun pictures for friend invitations, more formal for a family invitation.
Gift for parents: Something up close and frame-able

If you are causal people then what you plan to wear sounds fine. I wore cuffed jean capris a red tank and a green shrug and he wore jeans and a blue t-shirt. It was fine.
Your photographer should be helpful on the poses.
Tell him to take some candids. Those happy accidents always end up being the cutest.

The photographer should be able to pose you without any problems. Just do what you do naturally. Do you walk around hand in hand? Arm in arm? When you sit do you put your head on his shoulder? Pinch his nose? Just look in each others eyes?
You also need to think about what you want from the photos. Do you want to frame one? A close up would be good. To put in the paper a b&w print would be good, close up. Also you can have 1 printed out on vellum paper and put in your wedding annoucement.
Check out photographer's websites to see their poses and if anything catches your eye, ask your photographer if they think something similar would do you justice.

I'd leave that up to the photographer...honestly, my fiance is a photographer, and he puts alot of effort in to finding poses that flatter the couple overall, and ones that will make the subjects feel happy and proud of their photos! Just wear what makes you feel comfortable and enjoy the session--you'll get much better pictures that way!

My daughter just had hers done...She and her fiance are also not the type to dress up, or be too formal. Their photographer met them at the beach, and took about 50 different shots for them to choose from. There were a few seated shots (on the rocks at the harbor), as well as a few standing arm in arm, and a few walking along the beach hand in hand. They ended up choosing one that shows them in the water, with his pants rolled up to his knees...not formal at all, and very much "them".
I'm certain that your photographer will have many suggestions about appropriate poses, and will take quite a few shots of each. Just let him (her?) know that you don't want it to look stiff, and he should be happy to help, and competent to make it work for you.

Look online for engagement photo poses you like. In fact my dad does engagment photos and he has some pics on his website. Go to www.davidschow.com he has some really cute engagement pictures for examples. And no worries about "dressing up" if that's not you, its not you. Anyways, good luck have fun, and just be yourselves!
