1. I heard that most places kind of..."discriminate" against single people who want to adopt. If you had a nice home, a stable income (100,000 +) nice family ties, and a stable environment, what is there to pick at a single person for besides being single?

2. Do you have to be married to adopt internationally?

3. How hard would it be for an american to adopt Italian kids?
greek kids?

thanks guys

Yes, single people can adopt, however some agencies and countries only allow married couples, and others only allow single women, but not single men to adopt.

Countries that allow singles to adopt include;
Ukraine, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, and several others.

Italy does not allow for international adoption, and in Greece only special needs children may be internationally adopted, and it takes several years for the adoption to finalize there.

1) Some do, some don't. If you have a stable home, you're going to fine. It also depends if you're wanting to adopt a newborn or will be okay with an older child.

2) In some countries, yes. China, for example, just started the law that requires a couple to be married. Other countries aren't so strict.

3) I imagine it would be as hard as adopting a kid from Asia. I do not know how much there is a need for adoption in Italy or Greece. Some countries use adoption as a last resort, and most will discourage from international adoption.

As a single who adopted from China before the new regulations ruled me out, I can tell you there are a number of countries that do not discriminate against singles. VietNam just reopened and they allow singles. Ethiopia, Nepal, Guatemala, and most of the Eastern European countries allow singles. I've not heard of anyone from the US adopting from Greece or Italy with the the one exception of my friends aunt and uncle who are Greek. They were successful in adopting a boy from Greece about 30 something years ago but I have not heard of any Greek adoptions in recent years.

I would recommend you join the Single adopt China yahoo group. They are now opening to other countries as well simple because China has shut down to singles. There are a lot of singles on that group who are looking at other countries since they missed the cut off and could not secure a single slot prior to China changing it's regulations.

If you are interested in domestic adoption adopting from foster care might be an option for you. Had I stayed in the state I lived in when I was a foster parent I would have been able to adopt the two children who had been placed with me. It' more than a little heart breaking if a child is sent back to their birth families and you expected to adopt them but it is truly a very fullfilling experience. Children love their parents even when they are abusive. Hopefully, the parents have learned better parenting and anger management skills when their children were in foster care.

Generally speaking, anyone with a nice home and stable income can adpopt children, regardless of their marriage situation. After all, orphans have no parents at all, so one is better than none at all. In any adoption however, you will find that you will be checked out and your background will be searched. This is for the safety of the child. As for international adoptions, the major areas that have adoptable children are Asia, primarily China, and Africa. Italy has a rather low birth rate at the time and there are probably not a lot of babies available there. Greece is also not at the top of adoption lists. You do not have to be married to adopt internationally, but it can be costly.

Each country has their own adoption laws:

In China for example, adopting parents need to be:

1. Married: And heterosexual.. No gay couples.

2. Have a household income of at least $60,000
(approximately)

3. Can Not be overweight. Yes, the Chinese are more worried
about children growing up obese, than America and
Dr. Phil.

4. At least 27 years old but not over 50.
(Not sure of the exact age but there is an age requirement.)

Please contact the adoption agency for more info about requirements...

hi, im only 17 but im adopted and honestly, i don't know that much about the actual process but i can tell you about what ive experienced
1. ive never experienced (or from what i know of my parents) any sort of discrimination or anything at all like that from anybody about being adopted. and i don't see why someone would ever discriminate against single people wishing to adopt. as long as a healthy and loving environment can be provided, it doesnt matter
2. im really not sure about international adoption, sorry
3.as for wanting a specific nationality...well...you might have to wait a while...i remember my parents have told me that when they went through the process, there are just so many different "options" you have...but the more specific you are the longer it will take. for example, my parents had no specifications at all and they had to wait about 8 years until they adopted me, so requesting a specific nationality may take quite abit longer
of course, this was 17 years ago...so things may eb different now
sorry i cant help you out with any facts or actual procedures

Ok, well, if you are going to adopt internationally, every country has their own criteria that adoptive parents must meet. This may include marital status, sexuality, religion or age. Domestically, it's basically down to the birth mother/father, as they usually choose the parents. As far as adopting from ltaly or Greece, again it would depend on the countries adoption policy, you would need to find an adoption attourney or agency to give you all the information. l've included a couple of links here to get you started, l hope they're helpful. Good luck with everything!

1: Its not the agency who choose the parent or parents its the adoptive mother. If you can find one who is willing to do a single parent home then you can adopt. But, most people want their children to have two parents.
2: I have no clue.
3: You can adopt a child of any nationality as its based on the birth mothers preferance.

Private agencies can do as they choose, and set rules they feel meet their birth parents needs. Most agencies have income requirments, some have faith requirement, others have requirments that you own your home and have access to medical insurance.

No, I have a single friend that adopted a child from Russia and China.

I do not know about European adoptions, sorry.

Honestly for international adoption I think you do need to be married. But I think the adoption agencies in the US are different. That is something that you are going to have to call and ask the agency about.
