A surgeon is a doctor! There is no difference, really, between a doctor and a surgeon.

A surgeon is a specialized doctor, just as an internal medicine or family practice doctor is a specialized doctor. The label is just different.

If you wanted to work in the emergency room, then emergency medicine residency is the pathway. You don't have to go through internal medicine and then have a fellowship in emergency medicine. You just have the EM residency.

Surgeon's don't really work in the ER like he ER doctor. Surgeons will come to the ER when someone with a trauma comes in or the ER doctor thinks someone needs surgery. Otherwise, a surgeon is either in clinic or doing scheduled surgeries.

I love medicine and that's why I went into it. If you want to make a lot of money, medicine is the WRONG way to do it. Yes, doctors get compensated well and are comfortable, however, with the amount of education required and hard work/responsibility to make said amount balances this.

For the most part, ER docs seldom study surgery and mostly study medicine. Trauma surgeons spend much of their time in the ER, however, consulting on patients that may have to go to surgery.

If you are sure that you want to be a doctor, then your time as a student will help you decide if you want to go into medicine or surgery.

There is a lot of work you will have to do getting into medical school before you will have to decide what to specialize in.

The country needs more trauma doctors and surgeons, of course you'll have to become a doctor before you can become a surgeon.

Surgeons get to work on the trauma team, so being a surgeon is a lot more exciting if your thinking about going into emergency medicine

Being a medical practitioner is a lot of sacrifice. I bet people are telling you that already. But if you really want to be at the ER, ER medicine is also a subspecialty of medicine. You could perform minor surgeries and work wonders with a defibrillator machine. (Stay back!... Clear.. thud!...)

Emergency medicine is its own specialty. By the end of your third year of medical school you'll have a better handle on whether you'd rather go into emergency medicine or trauma surgery.

To be an ER Doc you need wheels on your feet, your head on a swivel and think in 2 directions at once.

To be a surgeon you need a strong back, a weak mind and a good set of reliable bowels.
