Most siren noises today are made not by mechanical sirens but by solid state oscillators. The mechanical sirens were very limited and subject to wearing out. The oscillators are completely flexible. If you ever listen to an emergency vehicle approaching an intersection their "sirens" change sound to warn other vehicles at that location.
So the answer is that other equipment does not just imitate sirens - it goes way beyond them.
