Mearn and Bubble above me are right
It is somewhat existent, but even at Daytona and Talledega (both superspeedways) the draft will allow the cars to gain on the one in front. But usually the car behind them will need help meaning that they need a car pushing them to get past the car ahead. When a car does attempt to slingshot many times they will get blasted by the air and allow the car to maybe get side by side but very difficult to pass because the side draft also exists.
The slingshot existed in the earlier days of Nascar where the aerodynamics weren't nearly as advanced as they are today and werent restricted by Nascar either. So to answer your question it doesnt really exist today, but it DID exist in Nascars earlier days.
I did notice that Ricky Bobby always had another gear and just shifted and the car got like 100 extra hp and took off just by shifting the car down.

It is completely true. NASCAR used to have it almost as crazy as the movie. Drivers would slow way down going into 1st turn at Daytona if they were in the lead because they would get passed coming out of 2 and when they hit the end of the back stretch they would be going many MpH faster and pass through the trioval.
It happens now in open wheel racing only since the restrictor plates.

The slingshot maneuver doesn't happen with the current cup aero-package, but it did happen at Talladega this year in the Busch Series. Bobby Labonte pulled around Kevin Harvick at the very end of the race.
We'll probably see more of it again with the CoT

Yes it is real, teams only use it at tracks like Daytona and Talladaga, but since they use restisor plates it is not used as much as it was back in the days of Richard Petty but the "Slingshot" is a real maneuver, Richard Petty did it the best.

NO. Don't listen to these people, if you pay attention in the movie when he "engages" the slingshot he downshifts, there is no way that while drafting down a straight stretch of track, that one of these engines could handle downshifting like that. Drafting is something totally different which is real. But NO noone downshitfs to a super gear to pass.

Its only a factor on a couple tracks, namely Daytona and Talledega due to drafting and the ability for the back car to run less than wide open throttle but stick with the front car and then punch the gas to shoot past the guy in front. Its not as prevelant anymore, but it is part of drafting at these tracks.

The only races I ever see a driver use the slingshot maneuver, is when NASCAR is racing at Daytona and Talladega.
