I just turned 18 and was wondering if I would get approved for a credit card? Or is it just a waste of time to try? Don't worry, I'm not going to screw myself, I DO have the means to pay it off.

Yes, you can probably get a card, although depending on your financial standing (not that of your parents) you may start with a lower limit. After a few months of making timely payments, they tend to increase those limits.

If you do not have enough credit history to get yourself an actual credit card, look into a secured credit card. Basically you give the CC company $500 up front, they then give you a credit card with a $500 limit that you must pay off each month just like any other card. In doing this, you are building your credit just like you would with a real CC. After 6 months or a year, if you have been making your payments, they will give back your $500 deposit and issue you a real CC.

If you have income you will probably approved by someone. Its not always easy these days. You might want to start with a store credit card, or possible have a parent/sibling that you trust co-sign the account with you. Normally when 18 years old gets credit cards on their own the interest rates are terrible and the limits are very low.

Good luck either way...

If you're a student, a lot of the time, places will have a credit card that meets the needs of students. It builds your credit, with a low balance. Express had this, don't know if they still do. Try that. Pay it off and get a better one.

Most credit card companies will issue a card to your dog, if you apply. Soon you will get a "pre-approved" offer in the mail. Or apply for one at your bank. (You DO have a checking and saving account, right?) All sorts of ways to get a credit card...much TOO easy to get.

quite often you can get a credit card through the bank you have your checking account.
Also, just wait, you will soon be slammed with credit card offers on almost a daily basis since you just turned 18.

My daughter has a credit card through her bank, and both my older children get offers almost daily.

Just be wise.
