I'm a receptionist at an escrow office and it seems like everyone around me is just...fake. I'm a sweet person, but I'm not fake and I don't really gossip. People seem to think I'm rude (not to mention they are all atleast 10 years older)
when people call I SUCK at lying to them if the person they are calling for is "not available" and a lot of times it ends up coming back on me, even if I was telling the truth.
Is there any way to fake being fake, and be a better liar? lol

Congratulations! You are one in a dying breed. In this age of phony and shallow personalities, you stand out as a "breath of fresh air".

DON'T YOU EVER CHANGE!!!!

We need people like you to help others who are controlled by greed and dishonesty. They need a solid example of what a good character is and what is respectable.

Don't you dare sink over to the dark side...you are everything that "real" people cherish in friends and the one thing that everyone needs for inspiration.

I wouldn't change myself for any job. I had a problem working as a receptionist and having to be fake etc. But like you, I'm a terrible liar. So I learned to still tell the truth but change it up without having to lie. For example: if my boss was available (like sitting at his desk doodling on a writing pad) and didn't want to talk to someone, I told them he was otherwise engaged or indisposed. If you can learn to do that for your job, you're good. But as far as fake people in your work place thinking you're rude I wouldn't change for them. Who knows, maybe they changed from sweet to fake just to fit in. I'd rather stand out for being decent than fit in to a bunch of fake people.

It's true, sometimes on the job you don't have a choice, especially dealing with the public. Learn new phrases for saying something honestly, say what you have to say with a smile in your voice (it's part of customer service, so if that is your job then you just have to deal with it :) - but it's healthy that you do know you are acting. Also with practice you get better at acting. Break a leg!

You gotta do what you gotta do... having to be fake for a job is a small price to pay for the self esteem that comes with doing something for yourself. Who cares if they're fake? EVERYONE in customer service has to act totally fake.. the difference is.. YOU KNOW YOU AREN'T. So just do it.. play the game, until you can get into something else that better fits you. I'm the same way.. trust me.

I could seriously go off on a rant here.. especially about the other people saying.. don't compromise.. blahblah.. Like I said.. you gotta do what you gotta do.. to take care of you and yours. Whats more important?! That BS? Or.. you and your family, and friends..??? Its just a job..its one step, out of all the steps you make in your life.. don't worry about it.. just suck it up and put on a smile.. if they think you're rude.. screw em! If thats what they think.. they don't deserve to know you anyways! Besides.. you're bound to learn something from it.. look for the positives. The negatives.. just ain't worth your time. Or your sanity.

I'll stop here..
I hope my rambling ranting babble makes sense to someone besides me.

Why on earth would you want to be a lying fake??? If you're really a sweet honest person then stay that way.

you dont have to be fake,,,just be more assertive in those calls. when someone isnt avaialable, you simply tell the person that "they arent available, would you like their voicemail, or would you like to call back later". leave it at that, no need to get caught up in an elaborate explanation of why someone wont pick up the phone.

You just have to stop caring. Then the fakeness will come all on its own.
