The answer is (d). Think of it this way: if there were no field, there would be no lines, so they would be infinitely far apart. More field, more lines. Only way to get more lines is pack 'em in, so they must get closer together.

Not very mathematical, but then Michael Faraday, who invented field lines, knew nothing beyond basic arithmetic.

It has to be 'd'.

A better answer would be: e. more dense the lines are.
