Join. Join as many clubs as you can. I joined Toastmasters years ago and it really helped me. The networking and learning to speak properly in front of a crowd was invaluable.

Also, volunteer. You might be surprised the number of contacts you can make working on a housing project, so big hitters work on those.

Finally, keep an eye on black tie charity events. Have appropriate clothing and spring for a event per year, when you can afford it move up to two, etc.

Share your knowledge, skills and abilities without putting a premium focus on "what's in it for you." Your reward will come out of it-if you are a great speaker, volunteer for any speaking engagement you can. If you are a great writer, then share your writing through as many outlets as you can. Also, get really proficient at figuring out what OTHER people need, and who you know that can help them get it. The more people who you become the Answer Man or Woman for, the more great opportunities will come your way.

The magic word for so many people I know is "alumni." Go to every alumni event you can. You share a common bond with many succesful people. And successful people know other successful people. It's a great way to begin networking. Starting a conversation is as easy as asking what class they are from.

I do... I don't mind talking or emailing people about certain things. I think that it is important but that is what we do here on Yahoo answers.
