First thing I do is buy a travel book for where I want to visit. I think Frommer's is the best. That way I can find where in the city I want to stay first as location is just as important as price. At that point I will check on Travelocity and Hotels.com to get an idea on pricing. I usually will pick a half dozen hotels to check further. Then I go to www.tripadvisor.com to see what others have said about those hotels along with the reports on Travelocity. By now I'm usually down to one or two hotels where I really want to stay. Last I will check pricing on the hotel website, usually I can find a better deal there than anywhere else. It sounds like a lot of work, but it really isn't. Especially since you learn a lot about the city doing this, something you were going to do anyway.

Travelocity.com usually. Their reviews are done by plain people who have used the hotels/motels and are usually pretty on target.
