G'day,
2 ways to do this:
1. Apply directly thru Australian High Commissions/Embassy nearest to where you live to choose what category of immigration that you want to be. This is the cheaper way but you will need to understand all the requirements and preparations by yourself.
2. Apply thru immigration agency. They can make a preliminary assessment of your chance to emigrate to Australia. If you have enough points, then they will help you to prepare the documents and what to do/say during the interview. This of course come at a cost, but for some ppl it is money well spent. Some agents that I know reputable are as follows:
immigration@nevile.com.au
adrian@wklawyers.com.au
Abt your dogs, this is the Australian Quarantine website:
http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/cat-dogs
Hope this helps. Good luck on your application and welcome to Australia :)

You need to get a list from Australia House, the skills they are looking for, can probably find this on the net. You will only get accepted if they have a shortage of your skills.
About 15 years ago my friend went there as they were looking for fully trained hairdressers, she moved and has never looked back, hates the UK now, good luck! Sydney is fab so try to go there.

you definitely should be married before you start the application process.
immigration is limited to about 130,000 people per year - so expect to take a year or more to qualify.
your dogs would be placed in quarantine for quite awhile - months - and must have all innoculations & be vet checked - a very expensive proposition.
you would have to sell all electrical applicances as we are on 240v not 110v as in the usa. our cars are also right hand drive & we drive on the left side of the road.
you could try and have your company - ford - send you over on a working visa basis.

sorry to sound whatever...
but learn about australian unions...
learn about how they got us the 8hour day and pretty much every right you have at work...
learn about how we've treated the aboriginal people, learn about how we treat them now, learn about how john howard refuses to apologise for the stolen generation...
avoid greed, buy a house that you can afford and own outright, then do improvements on it yourself, don't buy a house in an area that used to be bushland because it will get hit by a bushfire, don't buy a house in a place where there's been natural disasters (like the hillside west of woolongong where they built houses against everyones advice and the land got washed out to sea)... generally do research...
what you save on your home you spend on your car what you save on your car you spend on whatever... you're a mechanic don't buy the new car but the old holden from the junk yard and fix her up, do it right she'll right royally kick *** (excuse the word use) and be more fuel efficent...
australia is the second dryest continent on earth water is precious we're also in a drought, so don't waste it (the driest is antarctica but only because dryness is measured in rainfall and water generally freezes and falls before it gets to antarctica lol)...
what else... don't use an aussie-ism unless you fully understand it... don't use "she'll be right mate" when talking about a fuel tank that reads empty and you just past the 7th petrol station, "she'll be right mate" is "I just fixed the tire with spinnifex grass, and pissed in the radiator because we're in the middle of nowhere and it's lucky if we get to the next town"...
um...
yeah...
other than that welcome to aus ^_^
