I think you refer to the belgian FN FAL rifle (FAL is for Fusil Automatique Leger or Lightweight Automatic Rifle). Yeah, it is a good weapon, very reliable et very powerful with its 7.62NATO cartridge. But the M16 is the modern combat rifle, using the 5.56NATO cartridge that is rather good in medium range combat if you hit a vital part of your target.
I'm used to the FN FNC...imagine a FN FAL in 5.56 and you have a FNC. Sadly, the trigger is very bad, making the weapon somewhat inaccurate sometimes.

It's a Belgian design that is several decades old. The weapon over all is quite nice but it is prone to jamming in desert environments. The gun does have a plastic stock like the M-14. The weapon is found in many third world armies that have had good relations with the west. The weapon is also much heavier than a M-16 and is one reason why the US army didn't buy it.

F.N. is Fabrique Nationale a Belgian Weapons maker.

7.62mm is a calibre of the rifle.

Steel Jackets are probably the type of bullet, although the correct designation is "Full Metal Jacket".

The way your question is worded makes me suspect you were never in the military and the nearest you got to any weapon is on a computer game.

F. N. 7.62mm Self Loading Rifle (SLR)

But I still like my mini-30 in 7.62x39, no plastic there either :)
