My daughter is 6 years old and I swear she has no concept of how loud she can be. I can't take her to a restaurant or anywhere in public without telling her 5000 times to lower her voice. I babysit a 3 month old baby M-F and 5000 MORE times a day I'm telling her to stop shouting while the baby is napping.
She isn't doing it intentionally, she just seems to lack volume control. I've started pulling her aside and making her sit totally still with no movement or no sound for 2 minutes (which seems like forever when we're sitting there and I'm watching the clock). I thought this could remind her to keep her volume down, but I don't really feel right about punishing her for something she isn't doing intentionally. Any pointers on how I can teach my daughter to control her volume? Because clearly, telling her 5000 times a day isn't working.

By the way...I'm a preschool teacher so I understand that 6 year olds are loud by nature..but she is ~more~ loud than your average 6 year old (if that's possible, lol)

My daughter needed a full physical (including a hearing test) before she strated school last year. I took her to the Dr and she did just fine.

I am in the same boat. My 6 yr old is LOUD also. All I do is continue to remind her and after 3 times of telling her I have her go downstairs. I also have a 6 month old daughter and It seems like my 6 yr old is louder when she is napping. When the baby is napping I usually have my other daughter go downstairs or I give her a book to look at. Sometimes having her color keeps her buisy.
Good luck!

my daughter can be loud too, and she's turning seven this coming july. sometimes, she speaks so loud that the people (especially those who did not know her) get startled when she suddenly speaks. even in school, she has the clearest and loudest voice which is a good thing because some kids talk just too softly for their teacher to hear. try talking to her in hush tones and a few feet away, and ask her if she hears you, or ask her why is she shouting and if that still didn't work, bring her to a doctor where she could be checked. she might have hearing problems and that makes her talk so LOUD because she can't hear herself clearly. goodluck!

I agree have you had her hearing checked? When my daughter was young, about this age she had fluid in her ears which caused her to lose 75% oif her hearing. It came on so gradual I didn't notice her not hearing me but speaking loudly. My Mom suggested a hearing teas which I did. She was put on meds and gained all of her hearing back. Left untreated it can be a permanet lose. Worth looking in too. If not, make a signal for your daughter like a finger on your mouth whenever she is loud in the house. That way it is automatic and she will learn and not be scolded all the time. Good luck with all this.

Try a tape recorder! Full volume and tape an hour of her normal day with other kids if possible. Play the tape back for her, and tell her that sometimes people listen to you ALOT more when you lower the volume...just like when someone whispers everyone strains to hear..but by being loud people try to ignore her!

I had a couple of students with this very problem last year. When they got too loud, I would mimic their volume and say, "ANNIE, THIS IS HOW LOUD YOU'RE TALKING." It would embarrass them (not too much, we had a good relationship), and they'd giggle when they realized how loud they really were being. Although they still continued to get loud when excited at times, I could give them a look and they'd tone it down immediately. Try it. It's not a permanent solution, but it will at least give her an idea of how loud she really is compared to everyone else.

You might want to make sure she doesn't have any hearing loss. People with some hearing loss can't hear themselves speak, or aren't hearing themselves at the same volume everyone else is.
If there's no hearing issues, then it would become an issue of behavior modification, and in which case, repitition becomes key. (such as refuse to acknowledge her when she shouts, but when she speaks in a normal tone, she gets what she wants or needs.)

My son is the same way. He's 9. Doesn't shout just talks very loud. Does it all the time. The neighbors can practically hear him across the street.

wow, do I feel your pain on this one... I would have her hearing checked....but I don't really think that is the problem. My son has a habit of doing this... I am always asking him why he is shouting at me when I am right next to him.... sometimes kids think they need to get your attention or they just get really excited about something.... If you find a good solution please let me know!!! Good Luck!

I have no advice other than what you are already doing. My 6 y/o neice (sil child) is the same. We joke that she takes after my dh because he has a big mouth. If either of them are in Wal-mart, you can track them down easily.

One day while you and your daughter are home alone, you talk as loud as she is, and explain that that is how she sounds. And when you guys are out to eat or babysitting it is very disturbing to others.
