Atheists are smart enough to realize that if they start going around proselytizing, they're no better than the religious zealots. Organizations like American Atheists exist so that people who don't believe in a god have someplace to share ideas--because you sure can't share them with the general public, given that polls show that about 95% of Americans believe in a god. Think how you would feel if you were surrounded, every day, by a society where religious beliefs were pervasive, to the point that the currency you had to use mentioned a deity in which you did not believe. Suppose you knew you could lose your job if you openly voiced your disbelief in this deity. Wouldn't you need some forum where you could discuss these things and realize you're not the only one who feels that way, despite what you see every single day, even from the President of the country in which you live?

Good question. I've thought of that myself. Some atheists are equally as bad as fundamental religious fanatics. That said, there is nothing wrong with promoting your beliefs (or lack thereof). Pushing your beliefs onto others is wrong. Promoting your beliefs is fine. Think of American Atheists like you would any organization. Some might be fanatical, but most people involved are just looking for a group that will support them and their beliefs. Nothing wrong with that.

American Atheists aren't "pushing a non-belief agenda." They aren't attempting to promote atheism as the way of life for all people.
The 3 goals of American Atheists is: To secure our freedom from religion, to labor for the complete and absolute separation of church and state, and to defend the civil rights of atheists.

1) Atheism is not at all an organization!
2) We don't try to push a non-belief on anyone. We respect that others believe differently then we do and just ask that you treat us with the same respect. Anyone that puts you down for believing in God is not a true Atheist.

Yes, atheism should be promoted. American Atheists has several goals, the primary one being the protection of the right to separation of church and state in the US.

I think it should be promoted!
they dont preach intolerance they preach acceptance of everyone's belief's all they want is to be treated like real people and uphold seperation of church and state, its sad when the atheists are some of the most understanding and level headed people (not to say all the normal believers in every catagory arnt good people and level headed as well, we all have our wackos from every end of the spectrum) when it comes to accepting other people when all those religions preach that exact same thing yet few people follow it.

Just what they've been doing:
They appear on televised debate, and trounce the theists.
They write books, in an attempt to educate people.
They stay informed of and involved in local politics, to keep fundalmentalists from trying to slip their religion in through the back door, like the situation with the Kansas Board of Education.

No. It's nothing to do with propaganda. All atheists I know chose their way by own, without influence of others. Every intelligent, responsible and rational person could easily understand what is behind of religions and created God figure.

Crazy people believe in imaginary beings. I don't see how pushing the truth that imaginary beings aren't real could ever be seen as "crazy" except by the crazy people who believe in them.
Among other things, atheist organizations provide support for the non-delusional when they are abused by Christians in school, in government, and in society.
