well i'm not a Hindu, but i took a class on Hinduism and i read a translation of the Bhagavad Gita. we learned that the meaning was to obey your dharma, and for the particular person, it means obey and fight, and you shall be rewarded. i personally don't believe that you were put on earth for a specific role but i'm not Hindu. sorry if i seemed ignorant in any way; i respect the Hindu religion and culture.

Friend,

from the scriptures ,when we read them intently, it will be evident that that in all times there existed good and bad.It is imperative that you can not have good alone , since it is the one side of coin, the other side is bad.So the opposites always existed and will exist.
Dharma and Adharma both were always there.but relative manifestation of adharma compared Dharma changes with Yugas because of good guidance and obedience in the people to listen and respect.but there will always be some adharma too.But as long as it is contained and not grows to alarming level, it does not matter that much. That is why in all Epics ans scriptures, Manusmruti etc we read how one should lead a life.
God is not a person sitting some where in the space on a golden throne with sThen thereword etc.It is the Omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient Cosmic energy pervading all over around us always, though we are unable to perceive it.
It is te divine Law that the Adharma should not go beyond a limit.then there will be anarchy and people can not live their normal life. This is called GLAANI.
when such situation arises the omnipresent almighty will assume some form to see that order is restored and the people are releived of that anarchy and made again to live happily doing their allotted Dhramas .
this has been happening from the beginning and we have seen it too .when a criminal becomes a threat to society , some force from owr own society will take action to terminate it.
this is the assurance Lord krishna, who alone declared Himself to be God, made it clear to Arjuna ,in the midst of Bhagavath geeta.
There is not an iota of doubt in it.we have seen ourselves several such incidents.
That I think is the promise meaning, and that is my humble opinion.

Lord tells arjuna "Hey parth when ever the balance of dharma tilts towards adharma I take an incarnation to restore the balance"
This is a very significant statement mistaken by many as lord assuring to erdicate adharma from this world.
Such an interpretation would be wrong because
If all is dharma and satya the creation would vanish.
so to stabilize the creation adharma has to be present always
It was there in all yugas and even krishna himself was subjected to abuse and insults by evil doers many times.
It is only when the evil reigns supreme and good has to hide itself God comes as a messiah to restore the balance.

Lord Krishna says so in Bhagvat Gita. The complete verse means-"whenever dharma will suffer loss and adharma(sin) will flourish on the earth,I will descend to the earth(take avtaara) to re estasblish dharma and eradicate adharma,to protect the saints and to destroy the wicked or evil; this happens in every yuga(age)"
the verse is -yada(as u mentioned)................... paritraanaya sadhunaa vinaashaya dushckrita;dharma sansthapanayo sam bhavaani yuge yuge(the part u left)"

This vesre is the life of Hinduism and the soul of devotees

The Supreme Lord descends from time to time in this material world to reestablish the teachings of the Vedas. In His Bhagavad-gita, Lord Krishna promises: "Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion--at that time I descend Myself. To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear milleniumm after millenium."

With this you should have quoted verst 8 also. Whenever there is unrest in the minds of devotees because of harressments they are put to suffer, they are forbidden for their daily rituals, their freedom of worship is taken away and the social order is thoroughly disrupted, then the Almighty again come on the earth to set everything right. First of all He protects his devotee by eradicating evil ones by dialogues, fines, punishments or behading at last. What ever contamination is there in the social order and scriptures, it is set right by Him again. The original spiritual/Divine values are established and devotees are again inspired to do right things, acts, duties with well structured society and culture. If one goes through Bhagavatam or Mahabharatam thoroughly, this purpose is well elaborated. Simple reading will increase stock of information but committed and devotional study will explain everything itself. All the great saints, sages, prophets, maharshis are representatives of that Almighty in every culture and every age. When situations go beyond their control or command, no doubt the Supremo comes himself.

Go to the Bhagvadgita please since a good translation is given. I always try to explain in a common way language because that is why Buddhism is popular religion.
Whenever there is a decay in religion I will take birth.
Yes I believe in each word , each alphabet which is mentioned in the Bhagvadgit a Book since God Krishna himself had said.
"Surrender to me ..... " A beautiful paragraph. I do not remember fully now.
