The mother will let you know. She will tell you when it's time. She will change her nursing habits, and won't lay down any more. She will sit upright and will allow them to nurse just a little, then she will leave. Once they have teeth and are getting playful, it must be annoying to nurse them!

When they are eight weeks old, that's a good age. But you need to start your kittens on solid food before they leave their mother.
Six weeks is way too young - kittens need the time with their mothers and siblings to learn socialization.
But please make sure your kittens get good homes. Do not take them to Wal-Mart and give them away to the first person who wants one. Go through local vets, and put signs up in your neighborhood.
And PLEASE get your cat spayed once her milk has dried. Keep her inside until then. Twelve million un-wanted cats and dogs are put to death in animal shelters nationwide every year.

You should wait till they're at least 10 or 11 weeks. If you give them away too early, they won't know how to act around other cats, and a number of other things. They need to be with their mother longer so they can learn more from her.

If you haven't started them on food yet, you should do so now. After they have been on food for about a week, and are doing well, you can give them away. I usually start mine on food at about six or seven weeks. I take them away from the mom completely once they start eating dry/solid food. That way, when they go to their new homes, they are not constantly meowing for mom, because they're already used to being away from her.

As long as the kittens are able to eat solid food and don't depend on their mother for milk, they would be fine away from their mother.
Around that age should be fine.

You can give them away now.Just make sure you give them to people that will take good care of them.
The next most important thing to do is get Mom cat spayed.Do you not realize how many cats and kittens are at shelters across America. It's the right thing to do.
