My apartment building caught on fire yesterday morning. Needless to say when the firefighters busted my door down the entire place infested with smoke. I got the dress out an veil out, but I had to carry it through a thick black cloud of smoke. I'm going to try the dry cleaners, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a special secret to get the smell out?

I don't think Febreeze is a good idea. The dress is most likely "dry clean only" and spraying a liquid on it may damage the dress.

I think your best bet is to take it to a dry cleaner. Mention to them that the dress smells like smoke and they'll do whatever they can to get the smell out.

Try putting it in plastic cover like from the dry cleaner, then put lots of baking powder in the bottom of the bag, and let it sit. Baking soda absorbs smells really well!

Good luck, glad it was not worse!

Edit... I don't think fabreez will totally cover it up, so you might end up smelling like a mix of smoke and febreeze like our coach when we moved into a house where people used to smoke. And it is just as hard to get the smell of febreez out of things!

Febreeze only temporarily covers up smells and won't remove it - so there's no point using Febreeze. Also, it tends to discolour some fabrics so I wouldn't want to risk it!

Just take it to the dry cleaner. They'll get it all out with no problem!

wow... hope the place is still livable and glad you and the dress got out safely....I am sure the dry cleaners will have an idea on how to get the smokey smell out.

Try Fabreeze. Just make sure to test it on a section of the dress that will not show if it were to discolor it.

Not related, sorry-- but you answered my question I thought I'd try yours! Maybe you could have 2 dances-- make an announcement that both these men are so important in your life, you just have to have 2 dances, one for each. :D I think they'd understand don't you? Good luck, and congrats to you too!
