I have been in the auto business for 27 years.I worked in new car sales, used car sales and in dealerships where the new and used car departments shared a sales force!

In auto sales, each dealership has their own pay plan. Most salesmen are paid a commission on each sale. Some dealers give a small weekly salary, or a draw against the commission, and pay the commissions once a month. Others pay the commission weekly.

You make more money selling a used car than you do a new one! There is very little profit left in new car sales any more!

Depending on how many cars you sell, you can make a good living or you can just scrape by. Many dealers will "pack the floor" with salespeople, meaning that they have more staff than they need. You will make less money in a dealership like that, unless you are willing to be seriously aggressive. Dealerships like this are high stress, with the sales force always competing against each other!

Others limit the sales force, and the sales force will make more. There are fewer people splitting the sales!

There is no set amount that you can make. When I was selling retail (I now am wholesaling, buying and selling used cars, mostly at auction) I had months when I made $10-15k. I also had months where I had to dip into savings to pay the mortgage!

I've been in car sales for almost two years now in the southern california area. The fact is that car salesman make between $25,000 and $80,000 a year depending on dealership pay plan, area, experience, and skill. But the real key in making money in car sales or in any sales profession for that matter is referrals. Once you have been in the business enough time and earned a good reputation and client list, you should have people asking for you all the time. Due to experience, skill, advertising myself in the paper, and most importantly, referrals, I made $45K last year and am on schedule to making $60K this year.
