My little baby poor thing has been coughing pretty badly and also sneezing sometimes, I've been giving her little measures of baby cough medicine. The cough tends to be worse during the night. Is this just like a doggy cold? and if so what else can I do to speed up the recovery?

Ok, first of all the puppy does not need to still be with his mother at 6 weeks. My parents have been breeders for 30 years and they have always began weaning the puppy off the mother and onto dry food at 6 weeks. A lot of times once the puppies reach 6 weeks old the mothers will actually start to show some aggression towards the puppies because they have teeth and it hurts when they try to nurse and because they are more active and are trying to play with the mother, tug on her ear etc and they aggravate her....I'm not saying all the mothers are like that but there a great deal who are. My parents would never sell a 6 week old puppy though. They usually sell the puppies between the ages of 8 and 10 weeks sometimes a little later if the puppy is smaller, or just isn't maturing as fast. As far as your puppies coughing goes I don't think it has to do with the food. Call your breeder and ask them if they have vaccinated the puppy for Kennel Cough, usually the vaccine is given around the 6 week mark or a little after and will often give the puppy side effects such as stuffy nose, coughing, sneezing, etc. You do need to keep a close eye on your puppy since it is so young and make sure that it eats and drinks several times a day. Just because you leave the food out for the puppy doesn't mean that it will eat it at that young age. The puppy needs to eat several times a day, I would say at least 3 times because you don't want them to have a sugar drop, once a puppy has a sugar drop it's hard to get them to come back from it, that is one of the most common mistakes people make with a new puppy. If you feel like the puppy is having a hard time with the hard food you have a couple of options. You can either soak the food in some warm goat's milk (goats milk is better than cows milk for puppies and you can get it in the canned version at some grocery stores and powdered version at a farm supply store if you get the powdered just sprinkle a little over the food and then run some hot water over it and let it sit until it softens), which will soften if up and puppies love it! Or you can buy some canned Pedigree puppy food, which you may want to do anyway to give for one of the puppies three meals. Or you can buy a softer brand of puppy food, Bil Jac is a good brand of softer puppy food...but really softening the food you've already bought with some warm milk would probably be your best option. There's really no need to crush the food at 6 weeks of age. Although my parents do that with their puppies when they are around 4 weeks of age, they will grind the puppy food and mix it with a little baby rice cereal and goat's milk and that is the first solid that they are introduced to, but at 6 weeks the puppy has teeth and really doesn't need to food to be so fine. Anyway just call the breeder about the kennel cough, and keep and eye on her, if she becomes sluggish, or more congested then get her to a vet so that she can get on some antibiotics. Good Luck and congratulations on your new puppy, try not to worry so much!

Is the dog UTD on vaccines? That would be the first thing I would do if your dog isn't vaccinated. He could have an upper respiratory or kennel cough. Even if your dog is current he can still pick up viruses or bacteria. Was your dog at a park recently or anywhere where he could get in to contact with other dogs or their feces.
Kennel cough vaccine is not included in your 5-1 or 6-1 or even your 7-1 vaccine. It is a separate vaccine or intra nasal only given to the dog when specifically asked for. Be very careful if it is kennel cough. If left untreated especially in Yorkies and small dogs kennel cough can rupture the esophagus and then your only recourse is surgery for a plastic one at a University or euthanasia.
Allergies, too, have you changed anything in your house lately that the dog may be sensitive too? Watch the cough medicine there are many human products which are harmful to pets.
I say go to the vet....If your dog is ill in any way and not current on vaccines your vet will probably treat the dog and then wait until your dog is healthy before vaccinating. This is normal procedure. In any case your dog is not comfortable and telling you something. Get him checked out now before you wind up spending a fortune. Good Luck

You should take your puppy to the vet because it could be kennel cough in which case the puppy could need an antibiotic. it could also be the case as was with my puppy, she is allergic to cigarette smoke, it took me a few weeks to figure out that when my friend came over smoking she would cough all during the night so if your puppy is around smokers try keeping her out of it for a while and see if it get better.

I would take your puppy to the vet a.s.a.p. It could be kennel cough or a cold, but either way take s/he to the vet. Also, you should never give your dog over the counter medications unless instructed by your vet as to which one and how much to give. Our medications have ingredients that could harm if not kill a dog.

It may have kennel cough or parvo. You need to take it to the VET! And do NOT give an animal human medication. That is not good.
Did you get it from a pet store? They are known for farming sick animals. I hope your pup can be treated and have a healthy life.
Call the VET.....NOW.

Sounds like you need to get to the vet. The cough could be "kennel cough". I would not give him the cough medicine either. At least call your vet today, please.

when i first got my puppy she had this problem too.
the vet said its "kennel cough" and may happen due to change in evrivorment if you got the puppy from a shelter or pet store.
go to the vet ASAP because it can worsen into a problem with the lungs.
