Well of course you can't buy the best bass of any kind for under $1000 (new). But you can still get one that will make you real happy.

If you play up the neck a lot and need to sound like Jaco you need an American Fender Jazz. But my favorite is the Warwick Corvette Standard because it's deep and dark like a bass should be.

For websites I like Musician's Friend though most of the big boys price alike. But you should check around for used ones too, because a lot of players buy a fretless and then don't wind up playing it much because it doesn't fit their style or skill.

Choosing an instrument is a very personal thing. There is no hands down, "This guitar is better than all the others."

That said, its hard to go wrong with a fretless American Jazz Bass. Its very versatile. For a slightly more aggressive sound I dig Musicman Stingray's. Warwick Fretless Corvette?

You also have to keep in mind whether you would want a lined or unlined fingerboard. If you want a lined fretboard, then you have many options at $1K. But if you want an unlined fingerboard your choices will be less.

I don't know about the best. That would depend on your style and the size of your fingers/hands.
