Very sweet breed. If you get one that is genetically sound, they are fairly healthy. They attach to their owners and adore them. High pitched barking is normal. Loss of teeth in the hairless variety is normal. They do have to be kept warm and do overheat easily. You have to take good care of them, this is not a dog to stick in the backyard and ignore. They are stubborn beyond belief. They won't come when called unless they want to. Mine is house broken, but I have heard some people say theirs were impossible to housebreak. I use pee pads with no problem.
I personally don't use sunscreen on mine because I worry that it absorbs through the skin. I do use baby clothes.
I believe the breed first came from a cross of xolo and chihuahua. They act a lot like chihuahuas, same attitude.

I'm not a fan of them but I don't dislike them. I don't think I would ever get one though. The "ugliest dog in the world" which was a Chinese Crested x Chihuahua was an obscene looking thing.

I have a hairless and a puff. They are neat lil dogs. If you dont go thru rescue, be careful in selecting a breeder. There are alot of health issues with this breed.
Puffs have a full double coat of hair, like a "normal" dog.
Hairless vary in amount of body hair. Mine is a "true" hairless, he has a little on his head and ears, sparse hair on his feet, and some nice feathering on his tail. Some of them have a strip of hair going down the back, and maybe down the legs. Some have a fine veil of a single coat of hair that covers most of the body. These are referred to as "hairy" hairless. Most show dogs are a hairy hairless that is shaved down. True hairless do not have the flashy furnishings. If you would compare my true to a show dog, you'd see he doesnt have the "mane" going down his neck, and he doesnt have the "socks" on his feet, the plume on his tail doesnt look as full as the show dogs.
Lighter skinned ones do need sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Mine is black and he builds up his tan in the spring.
Skin care is a big thing.. some of them need special shampoos and lotions. They are prone to acne and blackheads.
Dental loss comes with the hairless. Puffs should have normal dentation.
They are clingy, quirky little dogs. They are also master manipulators and know how to push your buttons to get your way. They are cuddly, but can also be very emotional. They are best described as "childlike". I often tell people that they are like a toddler, a cat, a dog, and a monkey all rolled into one... and yes, they do get into things!
Very difficult to housebreak. mine are probably 90% housebroken, and I have to keep on top of them about it. They are smart enough to learn tricks, but can be stubborn.. they are very food motivated however.
I read that they are believed to have descended from the african hairless dog, also known as the sand terrier. Its believed that Chinese Saliors took these dogs aboard their ships as ratters, so they could kill the rats, but not carry on the fleas. They also may have brought these amusing looking dogs back home as a gift to amuse the emporer. Hairless dogs have been found at many port cities around the world, possibly sold and traded by sailors.

one of the neatest dogs ever. i don't have one and haven't even met any but i'd definitely like to. hopefully they don't have that annoying chihuahua attitude though. since they are rescues for just about breed, google chinese crested rescue and see what you come up with.

So ugly that they are cute!
They are always the top contenders in the Sonoma-Marin fair, and they generally are the winners, too.
Does anyone here have one? Do you need to put sunscreen on them? Do they need to wear sweaters?
