can't take our 1 year old female pitbull Annie with us because the BMW we drive is on the lease. Annie is soooo cute and we never leave her in crate for more than 14 hours. She poops on newspapers in the back yard. We've had her since she was 4 weeks and she rarely bites smaller dogs. We even have a book on how to "teach a dog funny party trix". Our neigbours 8 years old kid has volunteered to take her to a potty once a day, however, he asks for 5 dollars for the service. Is this a good price? We love our Annie so much, and we want only the best for her.
Looking forward to our vacation.

Thank you for all helpful answers! I'm still hesitant to pay 5 dollars a day as the boy is autistic, hate dogs and we have a 10 thousand dollars home theater system.

All resolved! The boy just broke his hand while trying to kill a squirel. My 87 year old mother in law will be coming to let our Annie out to potty. She has Alzheimers, but we love her very much as well.

Is this a joke? I really hope it is...

Leaving a Pit Bull in the hands of an 8 year old would be insane. Plus, do you really think it is fair for the dog to be let out to potty ONCE a day? come on...

And you expect the dog to be happy while left alone for 7 days with no interaction/exercise/attention?

Do your dog a favor and use an experienced, professional pet sitting service, not some 8 year old kid. Even better, rehome the dog to someone who will not lock it in a crate for 14 hours a day. That is absolutely disgusting. And you say you "love her so much"...puh-lease.

I don't mean to sound harsh to you or the boy, but are you being serious?

If you want to take good care of it, take it to a kennels - look into what ones are good and go to a few that you have selected to have a look around. If you are willing to fork out $10,000 for a home theatre system why can't you take the dog to a kennel?

Leaving an 8 year old, especially an autistic 8 year old is not the best thing - and even more so if he hates dogs. He is clearly not in it because he wants to for the dog, he just wants a bit of cash. Its a good way to make it and good on him for the idea, but seriously.

While a pitbull could go its whole life without harming anything (and most would), they are prone to just snap. What I mean is if any breed is going just snap, it will be that one or some similar breeds.

Kennels here (in scotland) can cost £10 a day, probably more for dogs - thats $20 a day ... for a week thats $140 ... I don't know what the prices are like there but thats what I would be guessing at. I wouldn't even BOOK a holiday without knowing where I was going to take my dog (after looking round places to see what is best for money) and knowing that I was going to save up enough for the dog as well as myself for my holiday.

If you love your dog as much as you say you do, and honestly want the best for it, taking it to a kennel IS the best for it.

Can you even imagine if the dog had to be put down because it snapped at the boy ... let alone being sued.

Think about it !!!

Most boarding places charge anywhere from 18 to 30 dollars a day to care for your pet while you are away. There are also places that will come to your home and either stay there or will come by several times a day to care for your pet. So, I would say that 5 bucks is very cheap. However, Annie is going to need to be fed, make sure that she has plenty of water, more than 1 potty break and will need playtime while you are away. 14 hours in a crate is an extremely long time for a dog to be crated and with you away, it sounds like her crating is going to be longer than it already is. She will get bored and possibly destructive since she is not going to have an outlet to burn her pent up energy. If you really love her and want what is best for her, then either pay a professional to come to your home a couple times a day to let her out, take her for walks, etc or locate a boarding place for her to stay while you are gone. Anytime my family and I go on vacation and can't take our pets, we pay a relative to come stay at the house with them.

I'm sorry, I'm like most people on here, $5.00 is good for a kid but once a day to go potty, Not Good... To keep her in a crate all the time, Not Good & you did not say anything about her food & water, does she have that in her crate ??See I treat my dogs the way I'd like to be treated ! I myself, would not like to be let out only once a day would you ? COULD you hold it that long?? You could do what I did, ask a friend to stay at your house for those days & nights or even family. That way she can run when she wants to or go potty when she wants to.. I do have one question for you. Why do you put papers in the yard for her to go potty on ? That just seem to weard to me. Have fun at La Vegas but please do this for your dog, fined a family member or a friend to take care of her while you are gone, & your home will be safe too...

PS make sure you give motel phone numbers to who ever stays with your baby, so if something does happen they can call you right a way or cell phone number...

PS This is a joke.. He is doing it again !!

You leave your dog in the crate for 14 hours! That's cruel and negligent. Taking your dog out only once a day is cruel, too. $5 is cheap, so you should have the kid come 3 times a day, at minimum. What about exercise? Your dog needs to walk. If you love your Annie as much as you say you do, you must re-think how you take care of her.

Why not rent a car for this vacation? Who says you have to take the Beemer? Or does tooling around Las Vegas in a Beemer mean more to you than Annie? As for me, I'd rather drive a rust-bucket and bring my precious puppy with me - especially to a dog-friendly hotel for heaven's sake.

However, your money is your money. Well-meaning neighbors notwithstanding, I suggest that you hire a professional dog-sitter or excellent boarding kennel - as opposed to an under 10-year old to care for Annie. She should go out at least twice - You go more than once a day, don't you?

And a professional care-giver should be bonded, licensed and insured so that just in case an emergency happens, you will have some recourse. You would hate to involve your neighbors in some kind of legal situation wouldn't you?

However, provided that the PARENTS of the enthusiastic 8-year old supervise his tasks, I suppose letting him feed and then take Annie out to potty TWICE a day - and I would pay the family 1/3 - 1/2 what a boarding kennel or professional dog-walker would charge. It's Annie's welfare that's important - isn't it?

However you choose - rent the car, hire the professional, or hire your neighbors, don't forget to make sure everyone has emergency numbers - her vet, the emergency animal clinic, your hotel number etc.

As a pittie-parent myself, I would pay any price to make sure my darling Baby Blue cared for properly.

5 dollars is very cheap, much to cheap as a matter of fact. I would not trust any of my larger dogs in the care of a small child. No matter how well behaved Annie is while you are present, dogs of her breed are very territorial and in your absence may see this boy as a threat to her space, her pack. She will only want to protect your domain if you are established as the pack leader she may see this child as a threat and attack him. In my honest opinion I would not leave her with him. Find a boarding kennel that will take her or a service who have trained personnel to come over and tend the dog. Yes it is much more expensive, and safer as these people are trained and a sitting service is insured for the possibilities that arise. Without sounding condescending you rented a Beemer and are going on a trip to Vegas, spring for the extra cash to insure the safety of your pet and the neighbors child..

The price is fine especially to be sure she is taken care of properly. However eight years is a little young for the responsibility, and to be alone with some one elses dog. Talk to his parents and make sure he is up to it and can be depended on. I would never leave a dog in a crate for over four hours without a break to let the dog stretch his legs and go to the bathroom.

your dog will probably have to go out more than once a day, but it will can help teach the kid some responsibility and $5 is really nothing. Have fun on your vacation and don't get out of control in those casinos :)

Ask at the hotel for a doggy day care serivce.
You and your wife will be at ease knowing she is well taken care of at Doggy Day Care. She will thank you for her play date. Woof!
