It depends on what kind of videos you want to see. Generally, Media Player Classic is a good choice - easy to use, easy on your system.
You will also need the appropriate Codecs for the video files you want to watch, Real Alternative, QuickTime Alternative and ffdshow-tryout are the most important ones. (Take the lite version in case of the both Alternative codecs)
The VLC Player is also a good media player, but does not use the DirectShow codecs, therefore it cannot play RealMedia and Quicktime. The ffdshow codec, on the other hand, is already included.

VLC player, it plays almost everything except music.
Windows Media Player works fine for most and plays music and movies.
RealPlayer is a bloated piece of crap software, use RealAlternative if you need to play RP files.

for codecs, i always use FFDSHOW, which was recommended to me by a friend of mine who is a cameraman by trade and uses codecs all the time for converting his work, works spot on!, as for players, Winamp is free!, it plays AVI's no problem or as mentioned VLC player!...
