getting the gist of it is pretty easy, as i dont think there are any weird verb tenses you need to memorize or anything. the grammar is pretty simple. so you can pretty much converse w/ ppl in chinese after a year or two. getting the intonations and different sounds is a bit harder, especially if you arent used to making them (i.e. the x and q sounds in chinese).
chinese writing is also hard to learn, but thats just because its a lot of memorizing and has no ties to english to make it easier. there are some rules that can help you along w/ pronunciation and writing the characters in chinese, but not that many.
im sure if you apply yourself, youll do fine

YES (it seems like you don´t want to hear a definition, but I give it anyway, the alphabet is quite different from ours and on the other hand one should live in China to learn the language well. On the other hand I don´t know where you come from, maybe you are Chinese, than it´s of course easy for you.) (One more thing if you want to learn one of the most difficult languages for a foreigner to learn, try Finnish!) Have a good weekend!

Well that depends. The Chinese written characters are pretty hard to learn as there are thousands and thousands of them and they are all different although some look similar, but I think the listening and speaking part is not that hard. I speak and write Chinese fluently as I have lived there for years and it will become easier if you're totally immersed in it.
but i think english itself is quite a hard language. Another one is German.

Of course not!
Chinese has one of the most difficult writing systems around, ok, we agree, (being Japanese the most difficult, by far), but the language per se (Chinese), is not more difficult than English.
Russian IS difficult, Georgian IS difficult (many quirks everywhere, tenses, declinations, etc...)

yes, esp. if u dont begin at an early age
i'm chinese, and i can only speak it so-so (not literate)
although chinese was my first language, english quickly became my dominant language
dont listen to Dan K... i dont see how japanese is "faster" than chinese, although i would say, there are certain dialects that are pronouced slower than others

No, Chinese is my first language. Dutch is my native tongue. If you are willing to learn, you can get to it. :)

When it's English that we speak, why is "break" not rhymed with "weak", and the maker of a verse cannot rhyme his "horse" with "worse"
