i had this exact same problem a while ago, i didn't sleep one night and then the following night I was so worried that I wouldn't sleep that I ended up not sleeping at all again.
i had some good advice that includes others ways to promote sleep:
No caffeine after 4pm and nothing to drink after 9pm
Eat your evening meal by 7o'clock if possible, otherwise ur body is bsuy trying to digest
A hot shower or bath before bed is good
Gentle exercise during the afternoon, perhaps a swim
You have to go to bed thinking, ' i don't care' relax, and even try to start a dream in your head and you shud fall right into it.
If you worry about not getting any sleep then of course you wont, if you haven't fallen asleep after about 20mins, get up, read a book for a bit and come back to bed a short while later. don't lie there stressing about it.
good luck, hope u get some sleep (i seem to have mastered this act now)
:o) sweet dreams

The more you worry about not sleeping the worse it becomes. It really is not that important to sleep. We can get along quite well with just a few hours of sleep per day. Don't lie in bed thinking, get up and do something that wont disrupt the rest of the household. I sew, write letters, watch TV, bake cakes, do the ironing. Usually I become sleepy fairly soon and then I go back to bed and sleep, but if I don't, it doesn't matter, I have got things done that I probably would not have managed to fit in the next day and most important of all, my time has not been wasted lying in bed staring at the ceiling

Wow! You mean you lay awake all night not sleeping? What do you do for work? Don't you feel sleepy in the day? Do not keep worrying that you cannot sleep then you may not be able to sleep because of this. It is not very good to take sleeping pills just to go to sleep. There's an easy solution for this though. Before you go to bed, drink a glass of water. Then when you lie in your bed take a few deep breaths to relax yourself. Then avoid thinking of incidents that happened. Just close your eyes and count from 1 onwards in your mind. You will fall asleep before you know it.

It's important to exercise, even if it;s around the block, try at least 20 minutes non stop, increase to 30 and do it as many times a week that you can. At night take a shower, rub eucalyptus oil on you body, drink a hot cup of milk and read, read, read, read, I can assure you will be sleepy, make your bed comfortable, cleaniness is very important, good pillows, nice soft blanket and find you comfy position with maybe 2-3 pillows. And last, try to go to bed at the same hour. At least for the beginning of your treatment. Good luck!
p.s. I am telling you thi and I am getting sleepy................zzzzzz :)

Since my previous advice didn't help, don't just lie there. Get out of bed, and read something boring. Keep your eyes open as long as possible, and say to yourself that you are going to try to stay up. Try the Yoga Nidra on page 9, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris Otherwise, see anxiety treatments, on page 6, and try the Valerian, or get the appropriate download from http://www.hypnosisdownloads.com or see a REPUTABLE hypnotherapist. Failing that, attend a sleep clinic.

Rose this is called anticipatory anxiety. It is actually very common and most people with sleep disorders experience some level of what you are describing. You need to talk to your physician, explain what is happening and hopefully he/she will give you a prescription for a sleep aid that you can use temporarily to get back into your circadian rhythmn

if you can't fall asleep, get out of bed and read or drink herbal tea. when you get sleepy go to bed. Don't lay around in bed if you not having sex or trying to go to sleep, that will train your mind to think when you get in bed, it's time to sleep.

here is my advice, and it works! i have been through this before - i call it 'beditis' that is, the bed itself makes one worry about falling to sleep.
so......
sleep on the couch! sleep in a recliner! anywhere besides the bed. it seems to fool one into not worrying about if one is going to go to sleep or not - so one does.
ZZZZZZZ.........
