As the previous answerer stated, homosapien is another word for humans.
Depending on your religious background, there are multiple ways to answer that question.
From a Christian perspective, I can tell you that our role is one of being good stewards of what we have been given here on earth and in many regards, we have fallen short of our duty of preserving the planet and caring for it.

Can we exterminate ourselves? Sure it's theoretically possible, but unlikely.
More likely however, in the event of a nuclear or biological/chemical holocaust in which most of the world population perished due to radiation and/or disease, some humans would still survive somewhere on Earth and at worst set civilization back a few hundred years.
As for our role in nature? Because humans can in large part effect not only their own future but the world around them, it is unlikely anyone can answer that question.

No we cannot exterminate the human race. But ultimately, this is the only thing that will ever get the Green Wackos to shut up. Every "solution" they shove down our throats is either harmful to humans, or has equally bad impact on the environment that they whine about later:
1. MTBE in gasoline. Turns out formaldehyde comes out the tailpipe of cars burning MTBE-spiked gasoline. They can't even wait for us to die to start imbalming us!
2. CFL's - Great for the planet, but if you break one, you get exposed to mercury. Mercury never leaves your system. Break enough CFL's, you die.
3. Electric cars - Oops, using coal or uranium to make electricity is worse for the environment than a gas powered engine.
4. Hybrids - What do we do with the 1,000,000-fold increase in worn out batteries??
Co2 is killing the planet, and also happens to be the primary byproduct of human respiration, and they're always complaining about overpopulation. They want to poison us with mercury and get a head start on imbalming us. I think I smell a rat.

I have long thought that is the ultimate goal of liberals since everything they believe in somehow involves an incremental loss of some existing source of happiness or comfort to subject species..

Extermination is possible.
I think our roles are assigned by ourselves. According to our perception of our purpose.
Purpose being defined by our collective perception of life and where we fit in it.
