ive been prescribed metronidazole by my GP and im not allowed to drink whist taking them. its not your usual 'avoid alcohol' as found on most medicines.apparently it will make me violently sick and give me diarrhoea. although it could aid some fantastic wieght-loss, its a bit grim. anyone else taken these tablets and suffered their side effects? or any tips on how to cope over the weekend?

thanks for the supprt people. and a big thanks to the idiots who assume im an alcoholic ****! i had treatment for pre-cancerous cells in my cervix which left me with an infection, not an std. and most normal people enjoy a nice glass of wine after a hard week at work. so there.

I'd be more worried about why you feel you can't survive without alcohol.

The point of socialising at the weekend must surely be the socialising side..... or maybe I miss the point and the whole point is to match your mates drink for drink, wobble along on heels, throw up in the gutter (if you manage to get that far) and wake up the next morning say, "cool! My head is killing me.... must've been a good night!"

Drink lots of water, treat the week as detox. If your friends are the sort who are likely to try and tease you with your favourite drink because you can't have it, then avoid them this weekend. Spend your money on having a treatment at a beautician, get a good dvd, a nice friend who can share your lack of alcohol and have a girlie weekend and relax a bit.

If you do this, you never know you might feel so much better overall by the time your course of medicine is up.

You don't want to risk it. You will be way too sick to enjoy yourself and the booze will come right back up.
Metronidazole has an nasty alcohol reaction, you will indeed get very sick if you drink alcohol or even have too much vinegar. You'll want to hold off for about 24 hrs after you finish.
You will have a bad enough stomach ache from this stuff without adding to your troubles. Have some diarrhea meds on hand when you start taking this, and take it only with food in your stomach to help the nausea.

Great - now's your chance to discover: 1. You don't need alcohol to have a good time. 2. How stupid people can be when they've had a few. 3. How many nice non-alcoholic drinks there are. 4. How much better you feel the next morning when you haven't had any alcohol! Good luck!

take the tablets to kill the infection, just look for something else to do over the weekend.
beach, theme park, etc
either that or get something else to chill out with for the weekend!
7 days without alcohol ain't that hard...
unless you really fancy the sickness and diarrhoea that is...

How to cope over the weekend? You need more help than anyone on here could give you if you can't go without a drink for one week.

Yeah was on them for tooth infection and couldn't drink. My partner was also on them for the same thing and he did drink, but was violently sick had stomach cramps and bad diarrhoea. The hangover also lasted alot longer than it should have. I don't recommend it love. Just think though after seven days you will appreciate that drink alot more and you will have more fun knowing that you have been deprived for so long

My goodness can you not cope for one flipping weekend without a bloody drink!!!! I can't believe that. I have a medical condition and used to love a Vodka and Coke and because of this medical condition I haven't been able to have a drink for 11 years. So one bloody weekend isn't gonna kill you.

I got a wisdom tooth out last month, and was warned not to touch alcohol, aswell, as it would make me violently ill.
I went out and drank water, it was OK, mad not being drunk, when all around are falling over.

It's only a temporary inconvenience, and if the drunks don't really p*ss you off, you will have great fun, laughing at them

I find it difficult to reason with people like you its as if they know the logic but by some form of emotional magic a stranger can change the conditions .

Your taking the tablets for an STD ? possibly you have had the same cargo cult mentality that it couldn't happen to you .
I think its about time you woke up to reality
And the next step is to follow the instructions on the packet of Anti biotic , there not magic and will only work if you follow the instructions and don't drink

Grow up !!!!!

Yeah..dont mix the two. The infection you are treating with the metro will not get better, but worst becasue the PH in your body will be severely disrupted due to the mixture. I dont suggest it,you will be miserable and sorry that you didnt hold out!
