Lots of stretching. Sometimes it takes several months. If you hold the splits as far down as you can for as long as you can take it, your body will become more limber. You will go down further every time. You need to work on it almost everyday. Takes lots of patience and lots of flexibility. Just make sure you take it slow, you do not want to injure yourself. You hold your stretch for as long as your body can take it. Remember there is a difference between good pain and bad pain.

I was doing yoga and taikwando for a while and all the stretching we did in both of those classes, I am able to do the splits now, but it took almost four months.

Hope this helps.

Slow, static type stretching is best. Warm up before hand doing some gentle jogging, jumping jacks or gentle shadow fighting. Warm muscles stretch better than cold ones! Isolate and stretch smaller individual muscles and then larger individual muscles first before stretching muscle groups. Also work on strengthening and stretching your lower back since that is needed to have that kind of flexibility. Cool down stretching is also as important after working out so do a few minutes of that as well. Using things like chairs to help support your weight and take some of the tension off your legs and muscles along with using pieces or cardboard so that your feet slide easier and further will also help. Build up to using the card board! Also the "No pain-no gain thing" is counterproductive to building good flexibility and stretching. When stretching properly you should feel nothing more than a dull ache. Sharp pain or fellings of sharp ripping means you are stretching or tearing muscle fibers excessively and building up scar tissue.
One of the other most important aspects of stretching is breathing. Out through the mouth on the extension phase and in through the nose and out through the mouth while holding the stretch for 10-15 seconds. Proper breathing will help to relax you more and give you a more effecient and better stretch.

Partner stretching or three-man stretching is also very good and can get you very good results if done correctly. My classes normal warm up and stretching routine can be done in 14-18 minutes depending on how fast I push them. With raw beginners I take 20 or even 25 minutes for that routine with them. If you do the above and do a little research and reading on this you will see results in three to four weeks.

IT IS REALLY EASY. I USED TO DO BALLET FOR 3 YEARS WHEN I WAS 5 AND NOW AFTER 13-14 YEARS I WANTED TO DO IT AGAIN COZ I ALSO DO SALSA, LATIN ETC AND IT IS A REALLY GOOD MOVE AND CLASSIC TOO. WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO(AND THIS IS A MUST!!!) WARM UP BEFORE THAT. AND WHEN I SAY WARM UP I DON'T MEAN STRETCH A BIT BUT LITERALLY WARM UP. RUN A BIT, OR JUMP, OR DO SOME SIT UPS ANYTHING THAT CAN GET YOU TO SWEAT OR INCREASE YOUR BODY TEMPRETURE. THIS HELPS YOUR LIGAMENTS AND MUSCLES TO STRETCH 50% MORE AND YOU CAN THEN START TO STRETCH. THE BEST WAY TO DO IT IS TO GET A FRIEND TO STAND UP AND OPEN THEIR LEGS SHOULDER WIDHTH AND THEN HOLD THEM WITH BOTH HANDS AND TRY AND DO THE SPLITS(AFTER WARMING UP) BOTH WAYS BETWEEN THEIR LEGS YOU WILL LEARN IT IN LESS THAN A WEEK.

HOPE MY ANSWER WAS HELPFUL

lots of stretches first, you want condition the muscles in the stretch area. Take it step by step, see how far you can go down. Set goals, points on you way down. practice every day and before you know your it, you know what will meet the floor.
