hello. please help me.
my baby just turned 9 month old a few days ago.
all along he has been breastfed, he had some formula when he was like a month to 2 months old, after that it was all breast milk. He started to eat some solids now, like 3 meals a day. So i stopped breastfeeding him three days ago, and he just wont drink formula. Is that ok? some people advice me to stop giving him the solids (mashed stuff), and let him starve for some time, and he will eventually drink formula. Is this true? help me !!

i guess i should not have said the word starve. I am not gona starve him, i meant that i would just offer him formula at all times, and maybe when he is really hungry he will drink it. because if i offer him solids, he is not gona take formula at all.

Breast feeding is not only about nutrition, it's also about comfort. My son is the same age as yours. I am still breast feeding him as well as solids. About a month ago I tried to introduce some formula (in between breastfeeding) and he wasn't interested. I tried different formulas and teat sizes. He only drank one of the formulas and liked a small teat hole so he could really suck. Now he doesn't want the bottle at all but he does like drinking from a grown-up cup.

I have several friends that phased in the bottle. They also had to go through a few different types of formula.

If you are not in a position to resume breast feeding you can try the cup - he will drink less and probably more frequently. Also, you may need to find another way - maybe like lots of praise, kisses, cuddling....etc, to wean him off the emotional side of breast feeding.

Hope this helps.

If he isn't used to taking a bottle it may not be the formula that he doesn't like. If he has had a bottle then try changing formula's. If that doesn't work give him breastmilk in a bottle and slowly mix in formula. Mix the formula first with water then do like 3 oz BM and 6 formula then slowly increase. I would not take away any food or withhold anything from him could do more harm then good. Mabey he just isn't ready to give up the mommy time he gets from nursing. Could be his way of telling you he isn't ready to give up the breast. Anyway you could go back to breastfeeding till he self weans?

similar situation occurred with my baby when she was nine months old. One day completely out of the blue, she refused to nurse at all. That was that and i tried for two or three days to get her to take the breat but, she was certain she was done with that. So, the doctors told me she had to have formula. She had had bottles of formula before but, not much. She absolutely refused to have anything to do with the formula or the bottle. The doctors told me to bring her in because they were sure she'd have to be sick to act this way. They couldn't find any reason for her to refuse the bottle, she was healthy. I gave her formula in sippy cups and slowly -- probably over a week or so -- she became more willing to take a bottle but, she was never real attached to it. It was really hot (mid summer) and the doctors were all concerned that she wouldn't get enough liquids (kind of silly becasue she was eating fine and there were plenty of liquids in her food) but, she did fine. She is now 17 yrs old and going to Thailand for a community service project!!

Your baby is getting older and less food may encourage him to drink the formula. You could try different formulas as they have different tastes but this could be expensive unless you can get samples. Add the mixed up formula to cereals and mashed vegies and give dairy foods such as custard (made with the formula), yogurts and cheese. Your baby will then get a good amount of the dairy products needed in his diet. Don't give juices until he is older and limit them as they are full of sugars - natural but still sugars. I always water them down until they are around 3.

OK, I did not read the stuff in front of me but I would say NO, don't give up. Give him the food he needs and Whole milk, 2 %, Skim...whatever he thinks tastes good. As long as he is getting enough liquid (water, pump your milk...you don;t say...not that I am judging...) he will be fine! Make it easy on yourself. I know this is hard but he will be fine. Make sure he has enough to eat and drink and he will adjust, it will be a harder transtition for you than for him and in the long run all will be happy AND sleep well :) (3 kids all breastfeed and weaned!)...

LOVE.....

Just because he started solids does not mean he is ready to be weaned. Just start breastfeeding him again. He wonnt take the formula because it tastes disgusting. But your milk is made just for him and has all the vitmins and nutrients he needs. Eating solids wont give him the nourishment he needs but breastmilk will.
Please do not starve your child. He is still developing and needs nourishment from you.

keep up the food try giving him watered down cow's milk. my daughter doesn't like formula either so i started her on watered down milk and now she is 18 months she's on milk. fluids are not enough for a 9 month old to survive on they need solids.

He's decided he doesn't need the formula anymore. DON'T starve him!!! Give him juices, or water. Some babies advance faster than others. Feed him vegs. and as much fruit as he'll eat. He'll get his nutrition from that. Some babies don't need the suppliments, if they're eating the right foods. Good luck!!!!!!!!!

At 9 months old, he may prefer to drink formula out of a cup.

Is it possible for you to relactate?
