It's all in the genes, but it does have to do with, oddly, your hair color.
Blondes have the thickest heads of hair, meaning they have more actual hair follicles on the scalp. They also tend to have hair which is a bit thicker in diameter.
Redheads have the next thickest. Again, their hair diameter is a bit bigger, and they have more of it growing on their heads.
Brunettes have the least amount of follicles, and their hair tends to be the thinnest in diameter. A lot of people with brown hair do have really thick hair, but in general, it appears thick because of having curl or natural waves.
There are always exceptions, but those are the basic hair types which have been identified by science. There is one type of dark hair which tends to be very thick and very dense, and that is hair which appears black, such as a Native American might have. That trait is also shared by some people from Asia, and scientists speculate it is because the original people in the Americas came from Asia, crossing the land bridge that used to span the Bering Sea. Usually, that type of hair is very straight and very thick.
If you have thin hair, there isn't anything you can do to make it thicker, but you can make it appear thicker to the eye. One way is to get it permed--curls add the look of volume, which makes it look like you have more hair. You can also use volumizing products, which coat the hair with a thin layer of chemicals, basically making the hair shaft a little bit thicker--that gives your whole head of hair a thicker appearance. The easiest way, however, is simply to get a good cut and style. Layers create a look of volume, while having it all one length will make it appear thinner. I know stick straight hair is in right now, but if you have really thin hair, it can look pretty anemic. Try something with some curl in it, instead, and it will look thicker.
Good luck!

Most of it is genetics. Sometimes there are medical conditions which cause people's hair to thin.

Just the luck of the draw, I guess!!
I think there's a lot to do with genetics in it though - my daughter has incredibly thick hair, my son has very fine hair like mine!! Hubby has thick hair.
I want thick hair!!!!!

if you have blonde hair it will naturally get bleached by the sun in the summer. There has been this guy in my class who had golden blonde hair that has been a medium brown near the bottom part. When he came back to college after summer vacation, it was almost platinum blonde!
