A Papal Conclave works like this:

+ A pope dies and is buried

+ The cardinals come to Rome for the conclave that will elect the new pope. The word conclave (Latin, *** + clavis, literally, "locked with the key") designates:
. • The place in a locked section of the Vatican where the cardinals elect a new pope.
. • The actual gathering of the cardinals.

+ The conclave begins 15 to 20 days after the pope's death.

+ The cardinals pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit during a Mass

+ The cardinals, sealed in the Sistine Chapel, vote every morning and afternoon.

+ A two-thirds majority plus one is required for election for the first 30 ballots. After that, a simple majority is required.

+ After each vote, they burn the ballots and add special chemicals to make the smoke white or black.
. • Black smoke means no new pope yet.
. • White smoke announces the election of a new pope.

+ The cardinals may elect any baptized male they wish. There have been occasions in the past where they have elected a layman. After their election, the layman has to be ordained priest and bishop.

+ They ask the one elected if he accepts. The moment he accepts, he is pope.

+ The pope chooses his “Papal” name.

+ Then the new pope is announced to the world.

The Pope is not considered to be the most holy man. But he is respected because of his selection by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and his position as the senior pastor of 1.1 million Catholics.

With love in Christ.

It's a long answer, but the short piece is this,

He's elected by the cardinals after the death of the previous Pope. His election is by 2/3rds vote (Pope John Paul II had changed the rule to 2/3rds for the first few rounds of balloting then simple majority, Pope Benedict has reversed that rule). His election is for life or if he resigns/retires. His election is signaled by the cardinals burning a special log that puts out white smoke to signal to the laymen outside that the new Pope is chosen. It's not like popular elections where politicking is allowed and encouraged, in the college of cardinals, they're instructed to discuss the candidates and pray for holy guidance to make the right decision.

The Pope is seen as the highest and leader of the church because of the way the ancient church spread, each new church and priest had to be ordained by a preexisting priest and it was the Roman church that was able to attain the churches under it and their loyalty.

The Pope also gets his authority because the Roman church was founded by St. Peter and can claim one of the oldest rituals for worship and earliest ordinations making them closer to the gospel of Jesus.

This is also where Papal Infallibility comes into play, although many non Catholics talk about the Infallibility rule as a joke they misunderstand it and it's application. It means that when the Pope sits upon the throne of St Peter and issues a specific type of edict, it is infallible. It's only happened a couple of times throughout history so it's not a common thing for a Pope to claim that his ruling is infallible.

Hope this helped, feel free to msg me to clear up whatever I didn't explain clearly.

the pope is chosen out of a group of cardinals from around the world. they sit in a chamber in the vatican and cast votes for several hours, sometimes days. when the pope is chosen, smoke is issued from the chimney stack to let the people know a new pope has been chosen.

they see him as god's representative on earth, but not as holy as jesus, as they do not worship the pope.

I believe he his chosen for his ability to lie with a straight face

Catholics are so brainwashed they will believe and follow anything he says as being as good as the word of god they are tort that the pope is infallible.

Elected by the college of Cardinals in Rome. Catholics do not regard him as "holy," but they do regard him as infallible in matters of religion...so he has to be very careful when making a statement of faith that effects the "masses." (slight play on words, sorry.)

Catholicism, paganism wrapped up in a garb of Christianity.
The Pope is infallible according to their own writings. Jesus said " all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory"
Cardinal was a man, now He is Pope he is God?
Haven't you seen them bow to him? Even the angles said not to bow to them.
Pope is Antichrist.
