mmm, not sure what the rules exactly are but i cant imagine being able to kick someone off in the desert. The story on Headline News says the train called local police and when they arrived to take custody of the man he ran from THEM. I think the rules for kicking off a passenger are fine, if someone is endangering themselves or other passengers they should be kicked off and placed in the custody of local authorities, just exactly like they did in this incident.

Amtrak stopped the train and everyone on the train waited while police came to collect the guy. When the guy saw police, he fled into the woods.

People running away from police isn't uncommon, and isn't Amtrak's problem.

What else should Amtrak do, hold the whole train there for 4 days until they found him? In case he came back? Since he was EVADING POLICE?

Okay, lets get this CORRECT !! The passenger was unruly, AMTRAK called ahead to the local law enforcement, and dropped him (with his luggage) at a MARKED RAIL-CROSSING and WAITED until deputies arrived !! ALL in accordance with AMTRAK's published policy !!

The unruly passenger then FLED the law-enforcement officers and hid for 4 days. http://www.azfamily.com/news/local/stories/KTVKLNews20070629_amtrak-passenger.270c94f3.html

Turns out the guy MAY have been entering diabetic shock... providing "drunk and disorderly" symptoms. However when he was located his was NOT "almost dead"... though he did require hospitalization:

"Sims has been taken to Flagstaff Regional Medical Center for evaluation." [news article]
