hmm interesting a test of disobedeince...but disobediance isnt always a bad thing. example: martin luthar king, george washington and all the founding fathers (vs britan), abraham lincon (opposing slavery), stuff like that. these people disobeyed out of thier own knowledge and thier beliefs on human rights....

knowledge of good and evil....whats so bad about that? you understand what is "good" and do it and you understand what is "bad" and we do it.....isnt that kinds of what makes us human? if we didnt know any of that and lacked that sort of free will...wouldnt we be like telebubby zombies? i dont know but i enjoy having knowledge and learning....its a part of what makes me enjoy life...

I've wondered about that too -- how is knowledge a bad thing?
But when you put it in another context -- as a metaphor for children who lose their innocence, it makes sense. When you reach a certain age, and you gain knowledge about evil in the world, you lose your sense of innocence.
It's a very nice story. Too bad people take it as the word of God.

nothing wrong with it...
i believe the issue was disobedience & not the fruit per se... (imagine they can do whatever they wanted to do... just not one thing)
like imagine your dad have always told you not to drive his harley
& one day when he was out for an errand, out of nowhere a friend of yours dropped by & you two decided to drink a few rounds of beer.
then he said he had to go some place & he begged you to give him a ride & told you that your dad wouldn't find out & it will only be two blocks from your place anyway. (well we aren't even factoring in that you are underaged, unlicensed, have no insurance & have no helmet)
but yes... why not, right?
& then you run a stop sign & got pulled over.
Additional:
yes, you are right again, disobedience isn't always a bad thing.
but as in my lame example above. the youth who drove his dad's bike didn't know what he or she was getting into until he/she found out the hard way. & his/her dad already knew that something like that could happen & that is why he didn't wish his child to drive his bike in the first place.
again, we go back to the issue of disobedience, & trust & maybe even faith in someone who should know more than we do. (somebody who sees & knows the big picture & which we don't). just my thoughts.

Well look at the outcome, as soon as they gained knowledge, paradise was OUTTA DER! I think it's an obvious conclusion...knowledge is the antithesis of religion. Of course the sunday school answer would be something along the lines of:
By eating of the friut of the tree Adam and Eve gained knowledge of what was right, and what was wrong, thus negating their innocence through ignorance. By eating of the tree they essentially went from being god's sweet little 1 yr old infants to god's rebellious teenagers...and it pissed him off! Either way, one fact rings true on both sides of the issue, knowledge and religion don't mix well.

Knowledge gave us the ability to know that when members of the same family bear children, the offspring are always born with genetic defects like sterility and Mongolism(Down Syndrome). Knowledge says that the story of Adam & Eve is the creation of primitive man. Religion doesn't like that.

You're missing some vital words here:
They were forbidden to eat the fruit from the "Tree of Knowledge of GOOD and EVIL..." which, would not only remove their Innocence but, would ultimately cause their Death.
And it was because of their disobedience of God's Law that they were no longer allowed to eat the fruit from the Tree of Life and banished.

it wasn't the fruit of knowledge. it was the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil.
as in, before that moment all people could do was good. afterwards, they were able to do evil as well.
"Now the Lord God took the man, and He placed him in the Garden of Eden to work it and to guard it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying: Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you may not eat, for on the day that you eat thereof, you shall surely die."

The only restriction God gave them was not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eating of it, mankind then became responsible for the consequences of their decisions, the good and the bad. It resulted in the "death" of our relationship with God. Through their sin, we are all separated from God.
The bad and evil things of this world are the result of our lack of love and caring, just as the good things results from our love and caring for others. When we have wronged or harmed another, it results in a death of our relationship with them, just as it did with God. The result of sin can be said to be "death", which can be permanent if the offended does not forgive us. It can be restored if one repents; that is to have sorrow for what we have done and to ask for forgiveness. We try to ensure the offended that we will not do it again. Love and caring is the motivation to redeem the relationship.
There are those who do not care. they are self centered, unloving and thoughtless. Some seem to even delight in this evil and wickedness. They do not want and have no desire to restore relationships with those they have wronged or harmed. The worst things that one can do to another are committed with this attitude. Suffering, killings, tortures, etc., are done of their own free will.
God has made a way for us to restore our relationship with Him.... through Jesus Christ. Repenting of our sins and asking to be forgiven shows our love and desire to be with God. Jesus is His way of showing His love for us. Believing in who He is and what He has done for us is all the faith that is required. Those who do this and accept God's mercy and grace are saved from eternal separation from God. There is nothing to do to earn or deserve this other than wanting to do the good... to love God and other people. If they don't, they must pay the penalty and consequences for their sin.

It said "knowledge of good and evil" it meant they would know how it felt to be separated from God. Please quote the passages correctly and in context. Also try not to mislead, it only shows your ignorance.

God wanted to keep his flock stupid. Some still adhere to that ideal. The bible is full of "don't ask questions" bits.
and to Jewishgirl above, you said
"as in, before that moment all people could do was good. afterwards, they were able to do evil as well."
so before they ate the fruit, they did not have free will?
