My girlfriends cousin gave me car but it didn't run. So I took the car thinking that maybe I was going to fix it up, but I never got down to doing it. So now I need the money for another car and I want to sell it. It has expired Louisiana tags. And on top of that, titles and registrations are in his name. Can I sell it while his name is still on the papers? I didn't get a chance to change the paperwork into my name because he moved back to New Orleans after he gave me the car. So what do have to do before I sell it?

Tags and plates are only for cars that are being driven only, selling a car without tags dones't mean anything. But you can't sell it if it's not in your name. Unless your girl's cousin signs it over.

If he signed the title, you're good to go. Just go to DMV and title the car in your name.

If he didn't sign the title over, then you're going to have to go back to him for a signature and a bill of sale first.

If the other person isn't going to license the car, you can sell, but you put yourselves at risk if your cousin complains.

The tags don't matter either way if they're Louisiana tags; I doubt that it does if it's Texas tags either, since the plates go with the car if I remember correctly.

You can sell the car with expired tags; the question is, will anyone buy it?

And no, you can't sell a car that you don't own. Even though you have the car in your possession, you do not own it. Your girlfriend's cousin does.

No way dude...your name is not on the title...anyone one looking at that transaction is in for world of hurt.

You have to return to the stae where it was last registered, and work it out, or the other choice is to abandon it, and take your chance of burning bridges from whom you got it, since they are still liable for if you get in an accident, etc.

Call this person and ask if you can sign his name to sell it. If he says yes, you`re clear to sell.
