I find the range of opinions interesting, so here's mine.
By the time the cars are that old, reliability is pretty much the same statistically (not good due to age and hard use). Here's something you may not have considered.
The insurance is going to kill you on these cars, man. A new driver is going to pay a lot, but with sports cars you're going to pay a small fortune.
If these cars are in the 4-5 thousand range, take that money and get a small reliable used car like a Focus, Accent, Rio,Corolla, or Civic, maybe Taurus or Lesabre if you want somethig bigger. Save some money and put a big downpayment on a new car in 3 or 4 years

first i have to start by directing this at quite new here, none of them are gas guzzlers. the Camaro V8 gets 17 city and 26 highway. that is in no way gas guzzler. the mustang V8 gets an average of 16 city and 25 highway. not a gas guzzler. the mitsubishi eclipse gets about 20 city and 32 highway. not a gas guzzler. to be a gas guzzler you have to get less than 10 city and 16 highway. ok, sorry about that.i wouldnt suggest the eclipse. it will give you nothing but grief. the mustang and Camaro are nice, but not as a first car. not saying you would, but most kids tend to put their foot into the gas pedal to heavy and end up wrecking their mustangs or camaro's two months after they have them because they dont know how to handle them. if you want a fast car that is reliable and still gets decent gas mileage get a 2003 Dodge Neon SRT-4. it gets about 22 city and 35 highway. i know because i had one. good luck! hope this helps.

First see if the mustang is GT or cobra vs. standard model as well as camero S.S. or Z28 vs. standard and eclipse GS ,GT,or GTS vs. standard base model. Assuming that all vehcicles are in "good" condition and base model, with about the same mileage, the eclipse BLUE BOOK is the highest at 5400. That would be the best for resale. The Mustang is next at 4975 and camero is 4910.
If you are looking at these cars from a performance point of view remember the eclipse is either front or all wheel drive depending on the model and the other two are rear no matter the model. Rear is better for oversteer and all wheel for acceleration. Front is better for gas mileage and is forgiving in bad weather.
Personaly I like the looks and depenabillity of MItsubishi. Especialy the 99 like your looking at. It has nice lines and a cool street fighter looking front end.
The camero is only a good idea if you have a mullet hair cut and listen to 80s hair band turned up to 11 with the windows down, while smoking Malrboro reds.
Mustangs are a dime a dozen. Look around and you'll see them everywhere. Besides the base model is " all dressed up with no-where to go." .....Looks fast but is'nt.
Test drive the Mitsubitshi first and you'll never look back.

Gas guzzlers all.
I hate to say this but all your money will just go to polluting the environment, paying for repairs, and paying through the roof to get from point A to point B. you might as well take the bus or taxicab.
For looking good in one, I like the eclipse, but it depends on the color. Lol. The camaro is too wide and chunky and the mustang, well, same thing. Not too great looking spoiler. It is very dating (looks like it is old)

From a reliability standpoint, go with the Camaro.
It's quick, the gas mileage isn't bad, and parts are cheap.
The Mustang is o.k., but the camaro looks better, and Mustang parts cost more.
The Mitsubishi only looks good if you're a techno-dweeb with a lot of slicker in your hair and some space shades. Maybe a Fast and Furious wannabe.
When they break, it's usually the timing belt, head gasket or tranny. Expensive repairs.

Well I'd say choose between the camaro or eclipse. If your city is anything like mine, mustangs are EVERYWHERE. (I can talk about them, I drive one) I personally like the camaro better.

I wouldn't buy an Eclipse - they have to many mechanical problems. Personally, I would buy the mustang. I've had many over the years and they have always been reliable.

Honestly, I don't think any of those models/years deserves your hard earned money.
Those are all first car money pits. I would take that money, and put it down on something new, and reliable. The cheapest thing you might ever do on the first three is the inital price.
