It not only blocks air and aids wind resistance, it protects the driver and passengers from sand, bugs, water and small rocks that get kicked up by the truck in front of you. Lately, it also provides a surface to mount the inside rearview mirror and GM used it for a place to hide the radio antenna. It also gives windshield repair shops job security.

Mostly all of the above. But what most people don't know is in most states in the U.S. it is illegal to operate a vehicle with a crack in the windshield that may block a drivers view of the road. That said, a windshield is NOT required for the safe operation of a vehicle. So if you ever get a crack in the windshield of your vehicle and you don't want a ticket, knock it out!

Blocks the bird droppings and June bugs. You haven't lived until you have been hit in the teeth by a June bug at 80+ mph on a hot summer day. Just ask any Hell's Angel.

Keeps out rain, stones, insects - pretty obvious. It also helps support the car roof in recent models, a really bad idea in my opinion.

In a rollover accident, it can hold 30lbs a pressure per inch so THAT'S why you need to have your windshield replaced in there is a crack in it.

maintains aerodynamics, means you can drive without goggles, keeps bugs and rain out of the interior of the car. stuff like that.
