This is the only life I get... why shouldn't I make the most of it?

Well since I believe that once I die, that will be the end for me; I try to live life like every minute might be my last. I cherish my loved ones now rather than putting it off. I think the best thing I can do is to try to live my life in such an admirable way that when I am gone - my life will be a blessed memory for my Wife, my kids, family, friends and anyone else I come into contact with each day. I don't think of life as merely surviving, to me it's about being present in the moment - every moment.

I am no atheist, but I will add my 2 cents if I may. I think that it is the simple responses to stimuli that we all experience as human's that motivates anyone that has no belief in God, or whatever the athiest label means these days. The ability to get up each day is based on small things that motivate you, anywhere from a child, a friend, or just a hobby.

The thing that saddens me about this question is the implication that those who believe in god are living entirely for the purpose of getting somewhere in the next life.

I prefer to make the best of this life. I may not believe in god or heaven but that doesn't mean that I can't be a decent human being in this life *for it's own sake* rather than sucking up to my imaginery friend on the off-chance he might do me a favour after I die.

My motives to stay alive is to have children and live in their minds or change the world around me as to not be forgotten.
Death is ultimate but so it the human spirit.

What gives most people motivation to stay alive? I would get out of the way of an oncoming truck just the same as you would.

Everything ends. When I'm listening to a song, I don't turn it off because I know it will end soon.

Life can be fun, even if you know nothing awaits you after you die. Life is an amazing thing, and we don't know how fortunate we as a species are that we are able to recognize our sense of awareness. We can understand the world and ourselves, and it gives more meaning to life. Atheists don't need the comfort of pretending there's a God, but rather find happiness searching for the truth (based on what we can see/discover).

Life is a wonderful thing. I'd like to stay alive for as long as I can, because I don't believe in an afterlife. Actually, I'm agnostic, but I imagine that pure atheists usually feel the same thing.

Motivated to stay alive because death is ultimate. I am surprised (and pleased) that suicide isn't a Christian phenomena since they always seem to be looking forward to the future afterlife.

Considering all the possibilities against it, life is a miracle. I don't mean that in the religious sense, I only mean that it is precious beyond reasoning. I would like to enjoy life and try to understand the universe I live in.

And as much as I would like to believe in an afterlife, I have to accept the harsh reality and to make the best of things. I have everything that a human needs: food, shelter, love, family, compassion, and a democratic society that respects my desire to live. I do have strong depression sometimes, something I consider genetic (runs in my family), but I still want to enjoy life as much as possible.

As long as I have my family, then life is worth continuing.

It is called survival of the fittest. A Lion chases a Zebra, the Lion or the Zebra wins depending on the fight to survive.

It is called life and survival. I do not need a God in which to do that!

When the Zebra dies, it feds the Lion and then it rots. When the Lion dies of old age, it rots just like the Zebra. Human, Lion or Zebra, we all fight for life. Human, Lion or Zebra when the fight for life is done, we all rot.

Do not need a God to tell you that.
