Do you ever wonder what ham tastes like? Are you ever tempted to try it? Or does the thought alone disgust you?

My stepdad converted last year and I imagine he had a hard time giving up bacon.

Sigh, I grew up non-religious. A pity really, since I really miss some of those unkosher foods! I loved prawns, not so much ham or pork chops/ribs, but a properly cooked rasher of bacon...

Ah well, haven't touched any of that in18 years- in the beginning it was a lot harder, but now its easy.

Well, I've always thought bacon sounded tasty. But it would probably be easy to make a kosher substitute.
I've never really had an intense desire to try pork. I mean, I've grown up with the idea that PORK=BAD. Just the thought of eating pig feels weird to me.

EDIT: The Talmud says, somewhere, that God didn't want us to miss out, so He made a kosher substitute for every forbidden pleasure. It gives the example (if I recall correctly) of the brain of some animal tasting like pork. It doesn't give the exact recipe.

I echo allonyoav's story. I grew up in what was called Classic Reform and really **loved** bacon and scallops; not so much the rest of the ham/seafood family, though. However I've now been keeping kosher for about 25 years, give or take, and don't find that I miss these foods really at all.

OK I'm not Jewish, but Muslims don't eat pork either, so let it slide, ok? I ate pork as I child and haven't had any urges for a cholestorol-laden bacon burger! When someone believes in what they're doing and gives something up for the sake of God, God makes it easy for him.

its not hard to avoid ham or bacon. all you have to do is think about how greasy and disgusting it is. then it will be no problem at all. you would rather eat wolf vomit than that drippy, slimy pig meat.

the really difficult thing about keeping kosher is the separation of meat and cheese. thats the one that truly hurts.

I keep kosher, and I really do not think about what non kosher food tastes like. I have many friends who converted to Judaism, and they tell me it is easy to keep kosher once one has made the commitment to do so.

I've been working toward kosher for several years. I have no trouble avoiding pork, shellfish, etc., but too often I combine meat and dairy. It takes time, but it will come.

Have you asked the same question of priests regarding celibacy? I suspect being kosher is much easier. :)

It's not hard. Our greatest joy is to serve G-d and to avoid a certain food is not so hard. After all, there are so many others.

I have eaten it before when I was younger.

Honestly I have zero temptation or desire for it. Shrimp on the other hand is delicious, but I have not eaten it for years.
